Ottawa Long-Term Care Home Evacuated After Burst Water Pipe

A long-term care home in Ottawa was evacuated on March 30, 2024, after a water pipe burst, causing significant flooding throughout the facility. Firefighters responded to an emergency call at Carleton Lodge shortly after 14:30 local time, as reported by Ottawa Fire Services (OFS). Staff members had alerted emergency services when water began leaking from the second floor, raising concerns about potential ceiling collapses.

Upon arrival, fire crews discovered flooding affecting seven rooms on the first floor. The situation prompted immediate action, as firefighters redirected the water out through windows and removed toilets to create temporary drainage solutions. This swift response helped manage the flooding effectively.

Families of the residents were notified, and some chose to pick up their loved ones directly from the facility. Others were relocated to a different care home to ensure their safety and comfort during the incident. According to Dean Lett, the city’s director of long-term care, the burst pipe originated in one wing of the building. He confirmed that all residents are now safe and have been accommodated on-site.

In a statement to CBC, Lett emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting residents and keeping their families informed. “Additional resources are in place to provide support to residents and keep their families informed as we assess the situation and work to return to normal operations,” he stated.
