Roughriders Fall Short to Blue Bombers in Narrow 17-16 Loss

The Saskatchewan Roughriders, resting several starters, narrowly lost to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 17-16 in Week 20 of the Canadian Football League (CFL) season. Despite utilizing mostly backup players, the Roughriders managed to put up a strong fight against a team still vying for playoff positioning.
While the game may not have been thrilling, Saskatchewan nearly played spoiler against the Blue Bombers. A few strategic plays and different decisions in the fourth quarter could have turned the outcome in their favor. The defensive performance exceeded expectations, showcasing resilience despite the team’s low morale.
Quarterback Changes and Offensive Performance
Jake Maier, stepping in for starter Trevor Harris, displayed improved comfort as the game progressed. He finished with a commendable record of 15 completions on 20 attempts for 123 yards, including a streak of 13 consecutive completions that momentarily gave the Roughriders a 16-14 lead. His solid performance is particularly noteworthy as he seeks to secure a contract for the upcoming season.
However, the coaching staff had predetermined that Jack Coan would also see playing time. Coan struggled, completing only two of eight passes, which led to questions about whether the game’s outcome could have been different had Maier remained in the game. The decision to switch quarterbacks in the fourth quarter raised eyebrows, especially when the Roughriders opted against rushing the ball after securing an interception by DaMarcus Fields.
Defensive Highlights and Player Health
Linebacker Antoine Brooks Jr. stood out with an impressive performance, recording five defensive tackles, two special teams tackles, two sacks, and two knockdowns. Alongside C.J. Reavis, who successfully transitioned to safety, Brooks may solidify key positions for the playoffs. The return of Canadian cornerback Tevaughn Campbell further bolsters the team’s defensive lineup, allowing for strategic flexibility even with other players potentially returning from injury.
In terms of health, the Roughriders achieved their primary goal of maintaining player wellness heading into the playoffs. Receiver Joe Robustelli was the only player injured during the game, but head coach Corey Mace confirmed that he was cleared to play and avoided any further risk. Mitch Picton stepped up in Robustelli’s absence, leading all receivers with 71 yards, including an impressive 30-yard sideline catch in the fourth quarter.
The future remains uncertain for several key players who sat out, including receivers KeeSean Johnson and Dohnte Meyers, and halfback Rolan Milligan. Their availability for the West final on November 8, 2023, is crucial for the team’s playoff aspirations.
As the Roughriders prepare for their final regular-season game against the B.C. Lions next Saturday in Regina, strategic decisions loom large. Questions arise about whether to rest starters again or to give Harris some playing time. With the playoffs approaching, the Roughriders must navigate these choices carefully to ensure they are ready for the challenges ahead.
