Toronto and much of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are under a special weather statement as snow and strong winds impact the region. According to Environment Canada, an additional 2 to 4 centimetres of snow is expected, accompanied by wind gusts reaching up to 70 km/h. Areas including Mississauga and Brampton are specifically mentioned in the warning, while Markham and parts of Durham Region are facing a separate yellow snowfall warning, indicating potentially higher snowfall.

In Markham and Durham, weather forecasts suggest that these regions could receive 2 to 5 centimetres of snow, with higher elevations, particularly north of Lake Ontario such as the Oak Ridges Moraine, possibly seeing upwards of 5 centimetres. As conditions worsen, residents are advised to stay informed and monitor updates as they unfold throughout the day.

Police Urge Caution Amid Icy Roads

Toronto police are responding to reports of icy roads that have already resulted in several collisions this morning. Const. Shannon Eames of the Toronto police emphasized the importance of safe driving practices during these hazardous conditions. “We want to remind drivers to keep their headlights on and ensure their vehicles are clear of snow for full visibility,” Eames stated. She urged motorists to slow down, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and plan their journeys carefully.

Police are also recommending that residents reconsider non-essential travel. “If you don’t need to be on the roads, we suggest staying at home where you are warm and dry,” Eames added. For those who must drive, she highlighted the necessity of adjusting speed to match road conditions and being prepared for emergencies.

“Drive at a speed that feels safe for you. If you need to reduce your speed, move to the right lane to allow others to pass safely,” she advised. Eames further underscored the importance of having adequate windshield washer fluid, as visibility is crucial in snowy conditions. She also recommended that drivers carry warm clothing in case they need to pull over.

Community Support During Severe Weather

As temperatures hover around 0 degrees Celsius, the City of Toronto has opened five warming centres to provide shelter for those in need. Outreach teams are actively encouraging individuals to seek shelter indoors. The warming centres are located at:

136 Spadina Rd.
81 Elizabeth St.
12 Holmes Ave.
885 Scarborough Golf Club Rd.
349 George St.

Environment Canada continues to urge residents across the GTA to stay vigilant and check for updates as weather conditions evolve. With the potential for more snow and strong winds, it is essential for communities to remain prepared and prioritize safety during this significant weather event.
