Streamwood Edges Wheaton Academy 2-1 in Overtime Sectional Final
In a thrilling conclusion to the Class 2A Geneva Sectional championship, the Streamwood Sabres defeated Wheaton Academy 2-1 in overtime on March 15, 2024. This victory secured Streamwood’s place in the upcoming supersectional match against Grayslake Central, scheduled for 16:30 on Monday. The Sabres, with a season record of 13-10, demonstrated resilience and skill throughout the intense encounter.
Goalkeeper Alex Garcia played a pivotal role in Streamwood’s triumph, making 14 saves while allowing just one goal during the match. Coach Matt Polovin praised Garcia’s consistent performance throughout the season. “He kept us in the game early with some great saves,” Polovin noted, highlighting a particularly impressive diving save against Wheaton Academy’s Luke Rodriguez shortly after the match began.
As Garcia celebrated his 18th birthday, he remained focused on the game, stating, “I was just focused on the game. I was prepared and I knew this would be a high demand game.” His mental preparation and determination contributed significantly to Streamwood’s victory.
After a scoreless first half, Streamwood found the net with a goal from Max Galvan, assisted by Josue Lopez from a well-executed corner kick with 14:52 remaining in regulation. Polovin described Lopez’s delivery as “a perfect set piece,” showcasing the team’s tactical strengths.
Wheaton Academy, with a record of 20-4-1, responded fiercely. Sam Clegg equalized with 8:19 left on the clock, sending the match into overtime. The Warriors fought with determination, but it was Streamwood that capitalized on another corner kick opportunity. With 5:12 left in the first overtime, Emiliano Bermudez scored, again assisted by Lopez, giving Streamwood a 2-1 lead.
Lopez expressed his confidence in corner kicks, saying, “I really think corner kicks are one of my strengths. It is great to play the supersectional at home.” Streamwood finished the match with a commanding edge in shots, outshooting Wheaton Academy 15-7.
Polovin reflected on the team’s journey, noting, “It was a great effort by our guys. It was a team effort.” He acknowledged the challenges faced this season, stating that many believed competing in Class 2A would be easier than in 3A. Yet, victories against established programs like Boylan, Geneva, and Wheaton Academy proved otherwise.
Wheaton Academy’s coach, Jeff Brooke, praised his team’s performance despite the loss. “Jared [Jardis] played well and everybody on the team gave a great effort,” he said, referring to the goalkeeper’s 12 saves. Brooke recognized the achievement of reaching the sectional finals, stating, “We won 20 games and were in the final 16 in the state. That is quite an accomplishment.”
As both teams prepare for their next challenges, Streamwood looks forward to their home supersectional match on Monday, while Wheaton Academy reflects on a season filled with notable achievements and growth. The upcoming games promise to showcase the talent and determination of both programs in the pursuit of state glory.
