Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe Acquires Elements Casino in Chilliwack
A coalition of First Nation communities from the Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe has finalized an agreement to acquire Elements Casino in Chilliwack, British Columbia. The deal, confirmed on November 7, 2023, involves the purchase from Great Canadian Entertainment. This strategic acquisition is expected to bolster economic growth and community development within the region.
Chief David Jimmie, the leader of the Squiala First Nation and president of Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe Management Ltd., described the acquisition as a significant milestone for the tribes involved. “By coming together in partnership, we are not only investing in a strong business opportunity, but also in the future of our people,” he stated. The revenues generated from the casino are anticipated to enhance local communities, create job opportunities, and solidify the tribes’ role in the regional economy.
The agreement signifies a commitment to local ownership and collaboration, which Chief Jimmie believes will further integrate the casino into the broader economic landscape of the Fraser Valley. “It’s a proud moment that reflects how Indigenous leadership and collaboration can build a stronger, more inclusive future for everyone,” he added.
In response to the agreement, Matt Anfinson, CEO of Great Canadian Entertainment, expressed enthusiasm about the transition. “We have had the privilege of being part of the Chilliwack community since we opened Elements Casino Chilliwack in 2012,” he remarked. Anfinson emphasized confidence in the Ts’elxwéyeqw Group’s capability to lead the casino into a new chapter, benefiting both staff and patrons.
The Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe comprises seven First Nation communities, recognized as the original inhabitants of the Chilliwack River watershed. This acquisition is seen as a transformational opportunity for these communities, marking a significant step in their economic journey. The official statement from Great Canadian Entertainment highlighted the importance of this transaction, underscoring its potential to foster sustainable growth and prosperity.
As the communities prepare for the transition, they are focused on ensuring that Elements Casino Chilliwack remains a vital part of the local economy while enhancing the cultural and social fabric of the area. The completion of this purchase is expected to be finalized shortly, paving the way for a new era of Indigenous-led business in the region.
