U.S. Journalist’s Murder Sparks Global Outcry and Threats to Peers

On March 27, 2024, U.S. political commentator Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during a speaking engagement at a university in Utah. The shocking incident unfolded in front of hundreds of students and quickly circulated on social media, leading to widespread grief and outrage among his supporters, particularly within conservative circles. Kirk’s assassination has raised serious concerns among journalists and experts who have been monitoring the increasing influence of far-right movements.
Canadian journalist Rachel Gilmore, known for her extensive reporting on extremism, expressed her fears regarding the potential fallout from Kirk’s death. She warned that some of Kirk’s followers might respond with heightened aggression, stating on social media, “Will they now believe their fears have been proven right and they have a right to ‘retaliate,’ no matter who was behind the actual shooting?”
Conservative Member of Parliament Andrew Scheer quickly shared Gilmore’s comments, labeling her perspective as “twisted” and accusing her of harboring “so much hate.” Other Canadian conservatives echoed Scheer’s sentiments, intensifying the backlash against Gilmore. As a result, her name appeared on a website titled “Expose Charlie’s Murderers,” where right-wing figures sought to identify individuals seen as having celebrated Kirk’s death. This led to a wave of harassment, with Gilmore receiving numerous death and sexual assault threats, including chilling messages stating, “We know where you live.”
According to Wired, Gilmore’s initial analysis was validated when, shortly after the shooting, notable figures within the MAGA movement and far-right extremists began posting inflammatory calls for violence. They labeled Democrats as “terrorists” and referred to “the left” as “the party of murder,” advocating for a resurgence of far-right militias. In a TikTok video, Gilmore elaborated on her concerns, supporting her claims with evidence of the growing boldness and organization of far-right groups in Canada. She emphasized the tragedy of Kirk’s murder, highlighting its impact on his family, particularly his children who are now without a father.
Gilmore’s reporting has been characterized by a commitment to journalistic integrity, as seen in her contributions to The Tyee. While some critics label her an “influencer,” it is essential to recognize her as a serious journalist specializing in far-right extremism. Despite facing significant backlash for her views, Gilmore’s insights are grounded in years of research and reporting.
The murder of Kirk has struck a chord with those who admired his role in advancing right-wing politics. Responses from various political factions indicate a concerted effort to suppress criticism of Kirk’s controversial views on civil rights, abortion, and LGBTQ+ issues. The situation brings to light a broader issue regarding the safety of journalists, who should not have to navigate threats to their lives for merely doing their jobs.
This incident underscores the urgent need for a collective stand against violence and intimidation directed at journalists. As society grapples with the implications of Kirk’s assassination, it is crucial to reaffirm the value of informed discourse and the protection of those who seek to report on complex and often contentious topics.
