Winnipeg Police Arrest Man in String of Copper Theft Incidents

Winnipeg police have taken action against a series of copper thefts that have cost local businesses tens of thousands of dollars in damages. On September 25, authorities arrested Carl Beaulieu, a 34-year-old man, in connection with the thefts that spanned from August 27 to September 17, 2023. The incidents primarily involved the dismantling of commercial air conditioning units, leading to estimated repair costs of approximately $90,000 for the affected property owners.

The thefts targeted several buildings along Main Street and McGregor Street, leaving property owners grappling with significant financial losses. Police reported that the total value of the stolen copper was under $5,000, yet the damages far exceeded that amount. For instance, on August 27, a commercial building in the 1000 block of Main Street incurred damages of up to $14,000.

Details of the Theft Incidents

One of the more notable incidents occurred on September 8, when a local church located on the same block as the previous theft reported damages of about $10,000. Just two days later, two additional buildings on Main Street were targeted, resulting in losses exceeding $15,000. On September 11, thieves returned to the earlier site of the August 27 incident to steal copper from the already dismantled unit.

The most costly theft was reported on September 17, when a building in the 200 block of McGregor Street suffered damages totaling $50,000. The series of thefts prompted the Winnipeg Police Service to launch an investigation through their Property Crime Unit, leading to Beaulieu’s arrest.
