Winter Weather Advisory Imposes Travel Risks in Toronto
A winter weather travel advisory is currently in effect for Toronto, as Environment Canada issues warnings about potential periods of “heavy snow and reduced visibility.” The advisory highlights that areas east of Highway 400, including Toronto and the Durham Region, may experience hazardous driving conditions this morning. The agency cautions that “there may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic.”
Drivers are advised to exercise caution in low visibility situations by slowing down, watching for tail lights ahead, and being prepared to stop. Snow flurries are expected to taper off late this morning, with temperatures peaking at a high of 4°C. However, the wind chill will create a feel of approximately -8°C during the morning hours.
Record Snowfall Signals Early Winter in Toronto
This year, Toronto is experiencing an early onset of winter, with the city’s recent snowfall breaking records that have stood for decades. On November 9, 2023, Toronto recorded 9.8 centimetres of snow, marking the highest two-day snowfall total for this early in the season since October 21 and 22, 1981, when six centimetres fell. The recent storm also made November 9 the snowiest on record in 54 years.
More flurries are forecasted for Wednesday morning before conditions shift to rain, with a predicted high of 7°C. The weather advisory serves as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant and well-prepared for changing conditions as the winter season progresses.
For continuous updates on weather conditions, including hourly and daily forecasts, residents can visit the weather hub provided by Environment Canada.
This advisory, along with the record snowfall, underscores the need for caution and preparedness as Toronto navigates the challenges posed by winter weather.
