AerCap, the world’s largest aircraft lessor, has achieved a significant milestone by delivering the first two Boeing 777-300ERSF converted freighters to Kalitta Air. This delivery, which took place on September 12 and 13, 2023, marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Boeing 777 program, transitioning from passenger to freight operations.

The two aircraft, designated as “Big Twin,” were converted from passenger jets by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), a recognized leader in aircraft Passenger-to-Freighter (P2F) conversions. This achievement follows the receipt of the industry’s first Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) from both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Israel (CAAI), validating the conversion process.

Successful Transition to Cargo Operations

The converted Boeing 777-300 aircraft made their journey from Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), before being transferred to Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport (KOSC). The first aircraft, registered as N77BCK, arrived on September 12, while the second, N770CK, followed on September 13. Kalitta Air plans to introduce both aircraft into revenue service by early October, with additional deliveries expected in the coming weeks.

With the introduction of the 777-300ERSF, Kalitta Air aims to modernize its fleet by replacing older 747 Freighters. The new aircraft will enhance operational versatility and contribute to a reduced carbon footprint, aligning with the global push for more sustainable air cargo solutions.

Industry Impact and Future Prospects

Aengus Kelly, CEO of AerCap, expressed enthusiasm regarding the partnership with Kalitta Air, stating, “We are delighted to deliver the very first 777-300ERSF to our unwavering partner Kalitta Air, who have been with us shoulder to shoulder throughout this journey.” The certification from both regulatory bodies signifies a crucial step forward for the aircraft program, paving the way for future deliveries to other customers.

The Boeing 777-300ERSF has undergone extensive testing to operate at a payload capacity of 100 tonnes, positioning it as one of the largest freighters in the market. Connie Kalitta, CEO of Kalitta Air, emphasized the aircraft’s capabilities, noting that it will provide greater range and payload options to meet the increasing demands of the global air cargo market.

IAI markets the 777-300ERSF as having several advantages over its competitors: it boasts a 22% reduction in operating costs per tonne compared to the 777-200LRF, a range of 4,650 nautical miles (8,612 kilometers), and 25% more volume capacity than the 777-200LRF. Additionally, it offers a 21% lower fuel burn per tonne than the Boeing 747-400F.

The Boeing 777 family, which includes the 777-200, 777-300, and 777F variants, has proven to be a popular choice in the aviation market. The 777-300ER variant stands out as the best-selling widebody passenger aircraft, with over 800 deliveries to date.

As Kalitta Air prepares to take delivery of five more 777-300ERSFs, the demand for converted freighters continues to rise. IAI has secured orders for approximately 60 additional conversions, reflecting a robust appetite in the industry. The company is also expanding its global footprint of conversion facilities, aiming to enhance capacity for the Triple Seven conversions.

In conclusion, this delivery not only signifies a new life for the Boeing 777 but also underscores the evolving dynamics of the air cargo sector, where efficiency and sustainability are increasingly becoming paramount. With the successful conversion of these aircraft, both AerCap and Kalitta Air are poised to play a vital role in shaping the future of air freight operations.
