China Conducts Military Drills Near Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions

China’s military commenced joint air, naval, and rocket exercises around Taiwan on October 9, 2023, as part of what it described as a “stern warning” against separatist movements and external interference. This development follows heightened tensions stemming from U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, valued at over $11.1 billion, and recent comments from Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, suggesting potential military involvement in the event of Chinese aggression towards the self-governing island.

In response to the drills, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry declared its forces were on high alert and characterized the Chinese government as “the biggest destroyer of peace.” The Taiwanese military initiated rapid response exercises, emphasizing its readiness to defend against any potential threats.

The People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command announced that the exercises would take place in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding regions. Senior Colonel Shi Yi stated that the maneuvers aimed to enhance sea-air combat readiness and establish “comprehensive superiority” in key operational zones. He described the activities as legitimate actions to safeguard China’s sovereignty and national unity, emphasizing that they targeted “Taiwan independence” and external interference.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry condemned the drills, asserting that they confirmed China’s aggressive nature. The ministry noted that live-fire exercises and combat readiness drills were already underway, underscoring Taiwan’s commitment to national defense.

The military display included the deployment of destroyers, frigates, fighter jets, bombers, and unmanned aerial vehicles, alongside long-range rockets stationed around the island. This marked a significant escalation, as it was the first large-scale drill where the command explicitly mentioned “all-dimensional deterrence outside the island chain” as a goal.

China’s military operations come in the wake of sanctions imposed against 20 U.S. defense companies and 10 executives who were involved in the arms sales to Taiwan. This response occurred shortly after Washington’s announcement of what could be the largest arms package to Taiwan in history, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from Beijing.

In light of the escalating military tensions, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has announced plans to develop a missile defense system similar to Israel’s Iron Dome to counter potential threats from China. During Taiwan’s National Day celebrations, he highlighted the importance of strengthening the island’s defense capabilities in the face of increasing Chinese military activities.

As military exercises intensify, both China and Taiwan remain on edge. Taiwanese officials have condemned China’s actions as undermining regional stability and international law. Spokesperson for the Taiwanese president’s office, Karen Kuo, stated that such military intimidation poses a threat to neighboring countries and the broader Indo-Pacific region.

The drills are expected to continue with live firing exercises scheduled for October 10, 2023, between 08:00 and 18:00 local time, covering five areas around Taiwan. This ongoing military posturing underscores the fragile state of cross-strait relations and the potential for conflict in the region as both sides prepare for heightened military readiness.
