A 17-year-old boy in Florida, identified as Caden Speight, has been found to have fabricated a story about being kidnapped and shot by Hispanic men. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office announced on September 29, 2025, that after extensive investigation, the claims made by Speight were proven to be false.

The incident began last Thursday when Speight was reported missing from Dunnellon, located approximately 135 kilometers west of Orlando. His family received alarming text messages detailing the supposed abduction, leading authorities to issue a Florida Amber Alert. Sheriff Billy Woods commended the swift response from his deputies and the collaboration with state and federal agencies.

In a video statement, Sheriff Woods discussed the investigation, stating, “We found evidence of a single gunshot where Caden left his truck. However, his claims that he had been shot and abducted were quickly disproven.”

Authorities discovered that prior to reporting his disappearance, Speight purchased a bicycle, tent, and camping supplies. This raised significant red flags about the authenticity of his claims. Witnesses also provided information that contradicted his story, indicating he had simply ridden away towards Williston.

Sheriff Woods labeled the narrative presented by Speight as a “ruse.” In a shocking twist, Speight had inflicted a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his own leg before walking to a nearby roadway where he was found by residents. “There is zero chance that Caden’s gunshot wound came from any type of assailant,” Woods affirmed.

While law enforcement is still processing evidence, the possibility of charges against Speight remains open. Sheriff Woods stated, “I don’t want to make any statements on that until we have fully examined it all.” Notably, Speight’s parents have declined to allow detectives to speak with him.

The case has raised questions about the resources expended in the search and the potential impact on the community. Sheriff Woods expressed gratitude to citizens who provided tips and assistance during the search, saying, “When we do have any updated information on this case, we will provide you with that.”

As the investigation continues, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the importance of accurate information in emergency situations and the potential consequences of such deceptive claims.
