Hong Kong Firefighters Rescue Beloved Pets Amid Tragedy

A devastating fire broke out at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Hong Kong, leading to the tragic loss of at least 151 lives and significant destruction. Among the residents caught in the chaos was Jacky Lee, who rushed home to save her 15-year-old grey poodle, Jason. As flames engulfed the complex, Lee anxiously awaited news at a nearby shelter, fearing she would never see her beloved pet again.

The fire, which lasted for over 40 hours, became one of the deadliest in Hong Kong’s recent history. When Lee returned to the site, she faced a heart-wrenching scene of destruction. Reports indicated that seven high-rises were reduced to charred remains. On March 2024, as the situation became increasingly dire, a district councillor informed Lee that the search for pets had concluded. Just moments later, a firefighter’s call changed everything.

Amid the despair, Lee received the news she had been longing for: Jason had been rescued. The firefighter informed her that they had located her poodle in unit 2703 of the Wang Kin House tower. In an emotional reunion, Jason was cradled in the arms of a volunteer, still shaken but alive. “I was so happy I was out of my mind, I felt like I was in shock,” Lee recalled, describing the moment she saw her dog and how he recognized her.

The rescue operations were extensive, with the Hong Kong SPCA reporting that a total of 209 animals were saved from the buildings, although 63 did not survive. This outpouring of support from animal welfare groups resonated deeply within the community, as residents shared images of rescued pets online in hopes of reuniting them with their owners.

District councillor Lau Chun-hoi expressed hope for the survival of more pets, noting the strong will of animals to live. He suggested leaving food and water in the area to assist any strays that might still be alive. “In their hearts, pets are family too,” Lau emphasized, urging the community to check on residents who may have lost their furry companions.

In the aftermath of the fire, Lee called for the government to provide pet-friendly temporary housing for displaced residents. She highlighted the difficulties many face in finding accommodations for their pets on short notice. Jason, although initially timid after the ordeal, received a clean bill of health from the vet. Aside from mild dehydration, he was soon back to his usual lively self.
