Israel Closes Key Allenby Crossing After Deadly Shooting Incident
Israel has closed the Allenby Bridge, the only crossing between the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Jordan, following a shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of two Israeli military personnel. The closure was announced on March 15, 2024, by the Israeli Airports Authority, which operates the crossing. This action is in response to an attack in which a driver delivering humanitarian aid from Jordan to Gaza opened fire.
The Allenby Bridge serves as a crucial route for trade and movement, facilitating access for over 3 million Palestinians in the West Bank seeking passage to Jordan and beyond. The closure will remain in effect until further notice, significantly impacting both humanitarian efforts and routine travel.
In addition to the Allenby Bridge closure, the two other crossings between Israel and Jordan have also been affected. The Jordan River crossing in the north has been shut, while the Rabin crossing in the south is open only for workers. The restriction comes amid heightened tensions in the region, and no group has claimed responsibility for the shooting at this time.
Israeli police were present at the scene of the incident, and investigations are ongoing. The attack has raised concerns about security in the area, particularly given the bridge’s role in facilitating humanitarian aid deliveries and economic activities.
The Allenby Bridge is not just a vital artery for goods and services; it is also a lifeline for those in need. Humanitarian organizations rely on this crossing to deliver essential supplies to Gaza and to assist individuals seeking medical care or family reunification across borders.
The decision to close this key crossing underscores the delicate balance of security and humanitarian needs in the region. As the situation develops, further updates from the Israeli Airports Authority and government officials are expected.
