Latter-day Saints Hold General Conference Following Leadership Change

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints convened its twice-annual general conference on March 30, 2024, marking a significant moment in its history. This gathering occurs just days after the death of President Russell M. Nelson, who passed away at the age of 101, and in the aftermath of a tragic shooting at a congregation in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan. With Nelson’s passing, a leadership transition is underway, but the church’s established hierarchy is designed to ensure continuity.
Leadership Transition in the Church
Dallin H. Oaks, currently one of Nelson’s top counselors, is poised to become the next president of the church. His ascension is expected to be formally announced following Nelson’s funeral, scheduled for April 2, 2024. Oaks is set to lead the church’s more than 17 million members worldwide, supported by the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which is currently guiding the church in the absence of a president. This situation is reminiscent of the early days of the church when leadership transitions could take time, as seen after the deaths of Brigham Young and John Taylor.
This marks the first general conference held without a president in at least a century. According to Patrick Mason, a professor of religious studies at Utah State University, while the church has not experienced a leadership vacuum, the absence of Nelson will be felt deeply during this gathering.
Reflecting on Nelson’s Legacy
President Nelson was a prominent figure, known for his charismatic leadership and significant announcements, including the construction of new temples. His influence extended beyond church operations, resonating with congregants worldwide. Matthew Bowman, a scholar of U.S. religious history, noted that Nelson’s presence will be missed, and speakers at the conference may reference his contributions frequently as they honor his legacy.
The conference serves as a unifying event for Latter-day Saints, featuring sermons that address important issues while allowing members to interpret religious doctrine personally. Many attendees will gather at the church’s headquarters in Salt Lake City, while others will participate remotely. The two-day event is expected to draw around 100,000 attendees.
In addition to the leadership transition, church members are grappling with the recent attack in Michigan, where four individuals were killed during a violent incident at a local congregation. The assailant, who was killed by police, reportedly had a grudge against the church. This tragedy adds a somber layer to the conference, prompting expectations that Oaks may address themes of religious freedom and civil discourse, particularly in light of recent events.
Given Oaks’ background as a former justice on the Utah Supreme Court, he is known for his traditional views on marriage and religious freedom, which have sparked debate among LGBTQ+ members and their allies. Observers are keen to see how he balances these topics with the need for unity and healing during this pivotal conference.
This general conference is not only a moment of transition for the church but also a time for reflection on its future direction under new leadership. As members come together to honor the past while looking forward, the enduring strength of the church’s community remains evident.
