North Carolina Governor Stein Collaborates with GOP on Recovery Efforts

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has adopted a collaborative approach with Republican lawmakers during his initial months in office. Since taking over from fellow Democrat Roy Cooper in January, Stein has emphasized cooperation with the GOP-controlled General Assembly to address pressing issues such as storm recovery and other matters of public interest.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Stein highlighted that constituents are primarily concerned with effective governance rather than party affiliations. “What they want is for whoever are in these positions to get things done that make their lives better,” he stated, reinforcing his commitment to working across the aisle.

Despite his efforts, Stein’s results have been mixed. Recently, the General Assembly passed storm relief packages, but only allocated slightly over half of the funding he requested. Additionally, legislators overrode several of his vetoes related to immigration enforcement, transgender rights, and other Republican priorities, which Stein has publicly expressed disappointment over.

Republican leaders have acknowledged Stein’s efforts. Larry Chapman, a Transylvania County commissioner and Trump supporter, remarked, “We appreciate everything that he’s done for us.” His comment reflects a growing recognition among some GOP members of Stein’s willingness to engage with constituents and listen to their needs.

Stein’s Unique Political Strategy

Stein’s approach contrasts with the more confrontational tactics employed by some Democratic governors nationwide, particularly in light of Republican gains and the influence of former President Donald Trump. Stein has opted for diplomacy, focusing on common goals like recovery from Hurricane Helene, which resulted in over 100 fatalities and approximately $60 billion in damages across North Carolina.

During a recent event in Fletcher, Stein assured attendees of his support, stating, “You and your constituents have been busting your tails to come back.” He avoided mentioning political affiliations, instead concentrating on the recovery efforts that are crucial for the community.

Stein’s collaborative stance stems from a need to repair relationships with Republican lawmakers, particularly after the contentious tenure of Cooper, who frequently clashed with the legislature. Stein has been proactive in maintaining communication with key Republican figures, including Destin Hall, the new House Speaker, and long-time Senate leader Phil Berger.

Balancing Act of Governance

Despite his cooperative efforts, partisan divisions remain evident. Stein has utilized his veto power on 15 occasions, rejecting legislation aimed at expanding gun access and dismantling diversity and inclusion programs. He explained, “Because you respect the people you deal with… doesn’t mean you don’t have real disagreements.” These vetoes have drawn criticism from some Republicans, who argue that they reveal Stein’s more progressive stance than he portrays.

Political analysts, including David McLennan from Meredith College, have noted that while Stein has faced significant challenges, he has also made substantial strides in his first year. His frequent visits to areas affected by Hurricane Helene, including 34 days spent in western North Carolina, underscore his commitment to rebuilding and fostering resilience in the region.

Stein’s efforts have included the establishment of a recovery agency distinct from the previous administration, which faced criticism for delays in housing repairs. His administration is currently seeking an additional $11.5 billion in federal aid, arguing that the financial assistance received thus far is minimal compared to the extensive damages incurred.

In response to criticisms about the speed of recovery efforts, Stein emphasized the importance of civil discourse, stating, “I think you can disagree with folks and still be civil.” This approach, he believes, is essential for effective governance, particularly in navigating the complex political landscape of North Carolina.

As Stein continues to work with both parties, his ability to balance collaboration with firm policy positions will likely define his leadership in the years to come.
