Ottawa Police Investigate Stabbing of Jewish Woman at Grocery Store

Ottawa police are investigating the stabbing of a Jewish woman in her 70s that occurred on March 13, 2024, at a grocery store renowned for its kosher offerings. The incident took place at Loblaws in College Square, located on Baseline Road, where the woman was shopping with a friend around 13:35 local time.
The attacker, identified as Joseph Rooke, 71, from Cornwall, Ontario, allegedly approached the victim and stabbed her in the torso without provocation. After the assault, Rooke reportedly dropped the knife and surrendered to authorities. He has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon, but further charges may follow as investigations continue.
Ongoing Investigation by Hate-Crimes Unit
The case initially fell under the purview of the West Criminal Investigations Unit, but the Ottawa Police Service has since activated its hate-crimes unit to delve deeper into the incident. Police are examining Rooke’s social media activity, which allegedly includes inflammatory remarks targeting the Jewish community.
Following the attack, the victim was swiftly taken to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries and has since been released. Authorities are maintaining an open stance regarding the motives behind the stabbing and have yet to classify the incident as a hate crime.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed his concerns regarding the attack, stating, “I’m deeply disturbed by the violent attack that took place this week against a Jewish woman at an Ottawa grocery store. My thoughts are with the victim as well as Ottawa’s Jewish community. I pray she makes a full recovery.” He also affirmed his support for the police’s ongoing investigation.
Rooke currently remains in custody as he awaits further legal proceedings. The Ottawa Police Service continues to urge anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward, emphasizing the need to address hate and violence in the community.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern among residents and community leaders alike, reflecting broader issues of antisemitism and hate crimes that persist in various societies. The police are committed to thoroughly investigating the case to ensure justice is served.
