Police Conduct Major Training Drill for Rising Threats to Lawmakers

LAUREL, Maryland — In response to a significant increase in threats against lawmakers, around 600 officers from nearly 20 agencies participated in a large-scale training exercise on January 6, 2024. This operation, led by the U.S. Capitol Police, simulated high-pressure scenarios that highlighted the urgent need for improved coordination among law enforcement agencies in Washington, D.C.
The training took place at a Secret Service complex and featured a range of scenarios, including a simulated attack on a lawmaker’s vehicle. Officers in full riot gear swiftly intervened, demonstrating their preparedness to respond to potential crises. Another team nearby arrested an individual spotted with a firearm among the crowd. This comprehensive drill underscored the growing importance of collaboration among agencies in the face of escalating political violence.
Law enforcement officials are increasingly concerned about the surge in threats against public officials as the year 2025 approaches, which is projected to bring more risks than any previous year. The January 6, 2021Michael Sullivan, Chief of the U.S. Capitol Police, emphasized the critical nature of these exercises. “Making sure that we understand how the different teams work is critically important if we ever have to make that call for them to come in and help,” he stated. This focus on coordination has transformed how agencies prepare for potential threats, with teams now training together rather than in isolation.
The lessons learned from past incidents are being actively applied to current training. Sean Gallagher, an assistant chief with the Capitol Police, noted that the agency is committed to addressing the failures highlighted in inspector general and congressional reports. He described the drill as a proactive measure to ensure the agency is ready for the heightened political environment on Capitol Hill.
The urgency of this training is palpable among officers. Aaron Davis, a Capitol Police officer with nearly eight years of experience in the civil disturbance unit, reflected on the necessity of preparation. He recalled the chaos of January 6, stating, “We use our imagination like crazy in training, just because you don’t want that to be the first time you encounter something of that nature.”
Throughout the exercise, demonstrators shouted slogans and threw simulated projectiles, mimicking real protest scenarios that have become increasingly common across the nation. Officers responded swiftly, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining order amid rising tensions.
The realism of the training is intentional, as officials aim to replicate the volatile mix of protest and potential confrontation. Andrew Ackley, assistant chief of the Secret Service’s Uniform Division, acknowledged the need for evolving tactics. “None of these situations are identical,” he said, emphasizing the importance of adapting training to meet new challenges.
As threats against lawmakers and public officials continue to escalate, law enforcement agencies are determined to enhance their preparedness. The collaborative efforts showcased in this training exercise are a critical step toward ensuring the safety and security of those tasked with public service in an increasingly volatile political landscape.
