Rubio Heads to Israel to Support Gaza Ceasefire Efforts
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Israel following the visit of Vice President JD Vance, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain the fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. This announcement comes after Vance’s recent declaration about the establishment of a civilian military coordination center in southern Israel, where approximately 200 U.S. troops are collaborating with the Israeli military and international representatives to facilitate the stabilization and reconstruction of Gaza.
Rubio confirmed his plans during a press briefing at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday. He intends to visit the coordination center and assign a Foreign Service official to work closely with the U.S. military’s top commander in the Middle East, Vice Adm. Brad Cooper. The U.S. is actively seeking the cooperation of other allies, particularly Gulf nations, to establish an international stabilization force in Gaza, which would also involve training a Palestinian police force.
“We’d like to see Palestinian police forces in Gaza that are not Hamas and that are going to do a good job, but those still have to be trained and equipped,” Rubio stated, emphasizing the need for support in rebuilding governance in the region.
Political Tensions in Israel
In related developments, Rubio criticized the recent actions of far-right politicians in the Israeli parliament, who granted preliminary approval to a controversial bill that could allow Israel to annex parts of the occupied West Bank. The bill passed with a narrow margin of 25-24 votes, and its future remains uncertain in the 120-seat parliament. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is scheduled to meet with Rubio on Friday, has the ability to delay or potentially block the bill.
Rubio reiterated the U.S. government’s opposition to this move, stating, “President Donald Trump has made clear that’s not something we’d be supportive of right now, and we think it’s potentially threatening to the peace deal.”
Meanwhile, Vance is set to visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a significant religious site in Jerusalem’s Old City, believed by Christians to be the location of Jesus’s crucifixion, death, and resurrection. His itinerary includes meetings with Israel’s Defense Minister, military leaders, and other officials at army headquarters in Tel Aviv.
Media Access to Gaza Under Review
On another front, Israel’s Supreme Court is reviewing the potential opening of the Gaza Strip to international media. The court has mandated the government to present a new stance within 30 days, reflecting the ongoing ceasefire situation. Since conflict escalated on October 7, 2023, Israel has restricted media access to Gaza, a decision challenged by the Foreign Press Association (FPA), which represents numerous international news organizations, including The Associated Press.
The FPA previously requested the court to compel the government to allow reporters into Gaza, following a rejection of an earlier request due to security concerns. Palestinian journalists have been covering the conflict, but they face severe restrictions and risks. The Committee to Protect Journalists has reported that approximately 200 Palestinian journalists have been killed by Israeli fire during this period.
“It is time for Israel to lift the closure and let us do our work alongside our Palestinian colleagues,” stated Tania Kraemer, chairperson of the FPA, highlighting the urgent need for journalistic access in the region.
This complex situation underscores the ongoing struggle for peace and stability in the region, as U.S. officials continue to navigate diplomatic efforts while addressing pressing humanitarian concerns.
