Sault Ste. Marie Residents Contribute Over $57,000 to Big Blue Drive

Residents of Sault Ste. Marie have made a significant impact by donating food and toiletries valued at more than $57,000 to the St. Vincent Place’s Big Blue Drive. On September 27, 2024, contributions were recorded at a total of $57,373, reflecting an increase from $46,000 in the previous year. The manager of impact and engagement, Sara McCleary, expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “We really didn’t know what to expect going in, so we’re really happy with it.”
The majority of the items donated were essential food staples, including pasta, peanut butter, jam, soup, and cereal. These items are vital for distribution among clients who rely on St. Vincent Place’s services. McCleary noted, “That’s always good when that happens,” highlighting the importance of these contributions. In recent years, non-perishable items from the Big Blue Drive have generally lasted until Christmas, which is earlier than the previous end date of February.
As the holiday season approaches, McCleary mentioned that “a fair amount of donations” during Christmas time help to replenish supplies. In the event that shelves begin to empty early in the new year, cash donations are used to purchase necessary items. An annual fundraising walk, called the Coldest Night of the Year, takes place in late February and serves as another opportunity for community support.
“It works out nicely,” McCleary added, referring to how one campaign focuses on collecting canned goods while another appeals for cash donations. The food bank operated by St. Vincent Place assisted approximately 420 clients in September alone, underlining the ongoing need for community support.
Initiatives like the Big Blue Drive demonstrate the power of community engagement in addressing local needs. With increased contributions year after year, Sault Ste. Marie residents continue to show their commitment to helping those in need.
