A classified meeting between Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) has been canceled following criticism from far-right figure Laura Loomer. Warner expressed concern about the implications of this cancellation for congressional oversight of U.S. intelligence agencies.

The meeting, which was set to occur with NGA staff, was reportedly called off after Loomer publicly questioned the agency’s leadership and Warner’s authority in a social media post. She accused the NGA of being filled with individuals disloyal to former President Donald Trump. Warner responded to the situation by asking, “Is congressional oversight dead?” He highlighted his history of having similar meetings with intelligence agencies across both Republican and Democratic administrations.

Loomer has been known for her controversial statements and conspiracy theories. In her recent posts, she claimed responsibility for significant changes within the administration, including the suspension of visas for wounded Palestinian children seeking medical treatment in the United States. Earlier this week, she criticized Vice Admiral Frank Whitworth, the NGA director appointed by President Joe Biden, and called on Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to terminate him.

Warner indicated that he believes the cancellation originated from Hegseth’s office, but the Pentagon stated that the meeting was merely rescheduled to ensure bipartisan participation in a town hall event. Spokespeople for the NGA, as well as for the Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, have refrained from commenting on the matter.

The NGA, although less renowned than the CIA or NSA, plays a critical role in collecting and analyzing geospatial information, including satellite imagery vital for military and intelligence operations. The agency’s director reports to both the Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of Defense.

Warner noted that he had previously participated in over a dozen similar meetings with the NGA, including during Trump’s first term, indicating a long-standing precedent for such discussions.

Amid Loomer’s social media activity, there has been a notable shift in the administration, with several officials resigning or being dismissed following her criticisms. This includes Dr. Vinay Prasad, former head of the FDA vaccine office, and Jen Easterly, who led the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

Loomer’s influence has also played a role in the State Department’s recent announcement to suspend visitor visas for individuals from Gaza, which came shortly after she posted videos questioning how children from Gaza received visas for medical treatment in the U.S. This has led to a newly restrictive visa policy for Gaza.

As the political landscape evolves, the implications of Loomer’s actions on the oversight of U.S. intelligence agencies remain a topic of significant concern among lawmakers and the public. Warner’s remarks encapsulate the ongoing tension between congressional oversight and executive influence in national security matters.
