Serbian Protesters Form Human Shield Against Kushner Project

Thousands of protesters in Serbia gathered on Tuesday to form a human shield around a dilapidated military complex in Belgrade, expressing their determination to protect the site from redevelopment linked to U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. The protest comes as the Serbian government plans to transform the area into a luxury compound, with a project valued at $500 million.

The complex, partially destroyed during the NATO bombing campaign in 1999, has been a focal point of contention. Youth-led activists drew a red line encircling the structures, which they consider a symbol of resistance against what they view as unjust foreign aggression. The site is slated for demolition under a development plan supported by the populist government of President Aleksandar Vucic, despite significant public opposition.

Recently, Serbian lawmakers passed a special law that facilitates the project’s progression, even as it faces legal challenges. The government argues that the redevelopment will enhance the economy and strengthen ties with the United States, particularly in light of ongoing tariffs imposed on Serbian imports. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the architectural significance of the buildings, which exemplify mid-20th century design in the former Yugoslavia.

The protests signify growing discontent with Vucic’s administration, which has been accused of corruption and mismanagement. This wave of demonstrations gained momentum following a tragic incident in Novi Sad last year, where a concrete canopy collapse during renovations resulted in 16 fatalities. On November 1, 2023, tens of thousands commemorated the anniversary of this disaster, further fueling public outrage.

The government’s controversial decision to strip the complex of its protected status has drawn scrutiny, particularly after organized crime prosecutors launched an investigation into allegations of forgery regarding the documents used to facilitate this change. Protesters are demanding the restoration of the site’s protected heritage status and its reconstruction instead of redevelopment.

“This is a warning that we will all defend these buildings together,” stated a student participant in the protest. “We will be the human shield.” The situation reflects broader dissatisfaction with Vucic’s grip on power, as anti-NATO sentiment continues to resonate strongly among the Serbian populace.

The involvement of Kushner’s company, Affinity Global Development, has added another layer of complexity to the situation. Earlier this year, a similar project was approved by the government of Albania, allocating $1.6 billion for the development of a luxury resort on a fortified island. The perceived close ties between Vucic’s government and U.S. interests have further inflamed public sentiment against the proposed redevelopment in Belgrade.

As the protests unfold, they underscore the ongoing struggle over national heritage and the contentious nature of foreign development in Serbia.
