Study Links Smartphone Use on Toilets to Increased Hemorrhoid Risk

Research indicates that using smartphones while on the toilet may significantly raise the risk of developing hemorrhoids. A study published in PLOS One reveals that individuals who engage with their phones during bathroom visits are 46% more likely to experience this uncomfortable condition.
The study, led by a team including senior author Dr. Trisha Pasricha, a gastroenterologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, suggests that the act of sitting on a standard toilet seat, without proper pelvic floor support, can increase pressure on hemorrhoidal cushions. According to the researchers, this pressure can lead to the cushions becoming engorged, eventually resulting in hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids, as defined by the Cleveland Clinic, are swollen veins located either inside the rectum or outside the anus. They can cause discomfort, itching, and sometimes bleeding. Dr. Pasricha explained to CNN that sitting on an open toilet bowl lacks the necessary pelvic floor support, which contributes to this pressure buildup.
In their findings, researchers noted that most individuals using their smartphones while seated on the toilet reported engaging with various types of content. Approximately 54.3% were reading news articles, while 44.4% were browsing social media.
Previous medical guidance largely attributed hemorrhoids to straining during bowel movements, often linked to constipation. However, Dr. Pasricha clarified that those using smartphones did not necessarily strain more than those who abstained from phone use. Instead, she posits that passive engagement with smartphones can cause the hemorrhoidal cushions to swell, ultimately leading to the development of hemorrhoids.
To mitigate this risk, the study recommends limiting smartphone use while on the toilet to no more than five minutes. Dr. Pasricha remarked, “The entire business model of these social media apps is to distract us, make us lose track of time and addict us to the algorithm.” She added that the full extent of smartphones’ impact on various aspects of life is still being understood.
The findings of this study serve as a reminder of the potential health implications related to modern technology usage. By being mindful of screen time, particularly in the bathroom, individuals might take proactive steps to reduce their risk of developing hemorrhoids.
