President Donald Trump has announced plans to construct a Paris-style arch just west of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. This ambitious project, which aims to enhance the nation’s capital, was revealed during a White House dinner on Wednesday attended by affluent business figures who have committed funds to a separate project involving the addition of a ballroom to the Executive Mansion.

While Trump did not disclose the estimated cost for the arch, he remarked, “It’s going to be really beautiful. I think it’s going to be fantastic.” The proposed structure is intended to be a lasting tribute and would complement Trump’s ongoing efforts to modify the White House and its surroundings, including the conversion of the Rose Garden into a stone-covered patio.

The arch, which draws inspiration from the iconic Arc de Triomphe in Paris, is part of Trump’s broader vision to rejuvenate the city. Earlier in his presidency, he expressed intentions to replace what he described as “tired” grass and improve broken signage and street medians throughout the capital.

Project Details and Timeline Uncertain

Plans for the arch include a statue of Lady Liberty atop the structure. Trump showcased three models of varying sizes at the dinner, indicating that the largest model is his preferred choice. The project is being developed by Harrison Design, a local architectural firm. However, details on the timeline for completion and additional specifics remain unclear.

The White House has not responded to inquiries regarding whether the proposal has been submitted to the National Capital Planning Commission, which oversees the planning and placement of monuments and memorials in Washington D.C. This commission has not been operational due to the ongoing government shutdown. L. Preston Bryant Jr., a former chairman of the commission, emphasized that federal law mandates a review and approval process for any new monuments.

During the dinner, Trump expressed gratitude towards his guests for their financial support in funding the ballroom project, which has a budget of $250 million. He suggested that leftover funds from the ballroom project could potentially cover the costs associated with the arch. “It’s fully taken care of now and, in fact, we’ll have money left over,” Trump stated. “We’ll use that probably maybe for the arch or something else that will come. But we love to fix up Washington.”

The White House has indicated that it will eventually release information about the contributors to the ballroom project, although this information has yet to be disclosed. The ballroom initiative was revealed in late July, indicating a broader commitment to enhancing the Executive Mansion and its surroundings.

Trump’s proposal reflects a desire not only to enhance the aesthetic of Washington D.C. but also to leave a lasting legacy in the capital city, known for its rich history and iconic monuments. As plans for the arch develop, further details on its design and potential impact on the city will likely emerge.
