Turkey Arrests Suspected ISIS Member Planning New Year Attacks
Turkish authorities apprehended a suspected member of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) on December 15, 2023, who was allegedly planning attacks on New Year celebrations. Ibrahim Burtakucin was captured during a coordinated operation conducted by police and the Turkish National Intelligence Agency in the southeastern city of Malatya.
According to the state-run Anadolu Agency, security officials disclosed that Burtakucin had established connections with numerous ISIS sympathizers both within Turkey and abroad. He was reportedly seeking opportunities to join the ongoing fighting in conflict zones. During a search of his residence, authorities seized digital materials and banned publications associated with ISIS.
This arrest follows earlier actions taken by Turkish law enforcement. On December 14, the Istanbul prosecutor’s office announced that authorities conducted simultaneous raids across the city, detaining over 100 suspected ISIS members who were believed to be plotting attacks during holiday celebrations. The police reported that out of 137 suspects identified, 115 individuals were captured in operations spanning 124 locations across the capital.
The Istanbul police indicated that intelligence suggested these ISIS members were specifically targeting non-Muslims during the festive season. In addition to the arrests, several pistols and ammunition were confiscated during the raids, further highlighting the seriousness of the threat posed by the militant group.
The Turkish government has intensified its efforts to dismantle ISIS networks operating within its borders, especially during high-profile events that attract large gatherings. Both the recent arrests in Istanbul and the capture of Burtakucin in Malatya underscore the ongoing vigilance of Turkish authorities in combating terrorism.
As the New Year approaches, security measures are likely to be heightened across the country to ensure public safety and prevent potential attacks during celebrations.
