Vietnam Flooding Claims 35 Lives, Thousands Affected by Deluge

Severe flooding in central Vietnam has resulted in the deaths of at least 35 people, with five individuals reported missing, according to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (VDDMA). The region has been battered by record rainfall since last weekend, leading to widespread devastation.

The torrential rains, which reached up to 1.7 metres (approximately 5 feet 6 inches) within a 24-hour period, have particularly affected the provinces of Hue, Da Nang, Lam Dong, and Quang Tri. The impact of the flooding has been profound, with emergency services continuing their search for the missing individuals as the deluge persists.

Severe Impact on Infrastructure and Livelihoods

The ancient town of Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has experienced significant inundation, with water levels reaching waist-deep in some areas. Residents have resorted to using wooden boats to navigate the flooded streets, as a local river has overflowed to a level not seen in over 60 years.

In addition to the human toll, the flooding has severely impacted local infrastructure and agriculture. According to the VDDMA, more than 16,500 houses have been affected, while over 40,000 poultry and livestock have been swept away. The disaster has also submerged more than 5,300 hectares (approximately 13,000 acres) of cropland, threatening food security in the region.
