The Windsor Goodfellows are set to launch their annual newspaper drive next week, from November 27 to 29, 2023. This three-day campaign, supported by a longstanding partnership with the Windsor Star, will see over 400 volunteers distributing special-edition newspapers in exchange for donations throughout Windsor, Tecumseh, and LaSalle.

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” said Steve Harrison, chair of Old Newsboys Paper Sales. The organization aims to raise $375,000 this year, building on last year’s success when the paper sales brought in $366,000, bolstered by contributions from local businesses and anonymous donors.

The funds generated from this initiative are crucial for filling Christmas hampers and supporting various year-round programs, including a local food bank. According to Siobhan Brennan, chair of the Windsor Goodfellows marketing committee, the community’s engagement is remarkable. “The amount of people that show up every year and welcome us by donating both their time and money toward this program is astounding,” she noted. “Every year it just gets better and better.”

Community Support and Innovative Giving Options

To facilitate donations, participating Walmart locations in Windsor and Zehrs stores in LaSalle and Tecumseh will introduce new tap-to-donate terminals. This innovation aims to accommodate those who may not carry cash, making it easier for the community to contribute.

The tradition of this newspaper drive dates back to 1914, when it first launched in partnership with the Windsor Star. The charity expressed sincere gratitude for the newspaper’s unwavering support, stating, “The Windsor Goodfellows extend heartfelt gratitude to the Windsor Star for its many years of steadfast partnership.”

The Goodfellows organization is open for donations on Tuesdays and Fridays. Additionally, community members can contribute at any time by using the mail slot at their headquarters located at 401 Park St. W.

This annual event not only fosters community spirit but also highlights the significant role of local organizations in supporting those in need. With continued participation and generosity, the Windsor Goodfellows strive to uphold their commitment to helping families during the holiday season and beyond.
