Career Programs Empower Students on Sunshine Coast

School District 46 is making significant strides in enhancing student career readiness through its hands-on career programs. These initiatives are equipping students with valuable workplace skills and practical experience, leading to a clearer direction for their futures after graduation.
During a meeting on September 9, 2023, Cheryl Wilson, the district’s career coordinator, presented the positive outcomes of various real-world learning programs implemented across the Sunshine Coast. “We offer so many experiences outside of the school,” Wilson stated. “You’ll see just how meaningful these experiences are for students.”
Wilson highlighted three primary programs: Work Experience 12A/12B, Youth Training in Trades, and Youth Work in Trades. Each program provides students with hands-on exposure to career opportunities in fields such as veterinary care, carpentry, and automotive work.
One notable success story involved a student who had previously struggled with engagement in the classroom. Through a summer work placement at Roberts Creek Golf Course, the student not only gained confidence but also impressed staff, transforming into “a different student,” according to Wilson.
The annual fire academy, which takes place during spring break, also received attention for its competitive nature. “We had 36 applications last year for 16 spots,” Wilson noted. Participants in this program learn a variety of skills, including building entry techniques and vehicle disassembly, which has generated considerable excitement among students.
The Pro Cook and Carpentry programs have proven particularly popular, with 24 applicants vying for just 12 available spots in each. Wilson also announced plans to introduce an electrical trades program as well as a dual-credit TV production course in partnership with BCIT.
“These students are getting credits for work that they’re still doing, they’re getting paid, and they’re getting their hours towards their trade,” Wilson explained. “So this is a win-win.”
As School District 46 continues to expand its career programs, the focus remains on providing students with the tools they need to succeed in the workforce, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
