Saskatoon Food Bank Launches Annual Campaign with Generous Support
The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre launched its annual Foodbank Light It Up campaign on December 5, 2023, coinciding with Giving Tuesday. The campaign received a significant boost from local union members, who contributed a donation of $10,000 to support families facing food insecurity in the region.
Brant Palko, President of UFCW 649, announced the donation, emphasizing the importance of extending union solidarity beyond the workplace into the community. “We’re happy to donate $10,000 on behalf of our members to the Saskatoon Food Bank today,” he stated during the cheque presentation. This contribution reflects the collective efforts of UFCW workers across Saskatchewan, who rallied to raise the funds.
The need for food assistance continues to rise in Saskatoon, with many individuals, including those in full-time employment, relying on the food bank. “Our members that we represent here in Saskatoon, Prince Albert, and Regina, they have full-time jobs, and some are using the food bank,” said Pat Horbay, President of UFCW Local 248P. This statement highlights the increasing financial strain many families are facing due to escalating living costs.
Addressing Growing Demand
According to Laurie O’Connor, Executive Director of the Saskatoon Food Bank, the organization expects high demand this holiday season. “Despite everyone feeling the crunch for the cost of living, we’re seeing folks come out in droves to support us in this campaign,” she noted. The Foodbank Light It Up campaign is crucial, as the food bank serves over 23,000 individuals monthly, distributing approximately 8,500 hampers each month. O’Connor stated that the recent donation will significantly impact operations, allowing the food bank to provide essential items such as milk, with the donation being able to cover 7,000 one-litre containers.
The food bank is appealing to the public for nutritious food donations, as approximately 40 percent of requests come from children. There is also a consistent need for baby formula and baby food, underscoring the critical support required for vulnerable families during this challenging time.
On Giving Tuesday, the contribution from UFCW serves as a powerful reminder of community support and solidarity. As O’Connor pointed out, such donations not only help stock the shelves but also keep the doors of the food bank open, enabling them to meet the increasing demands of those in need.
