Google Photos Launches Customizable 2025 Recap Feature for Users
Google Photos has officially begun rolling out its 2025 Recap feature, providing users with an enhanced way to relive their year. Starting this week, users can expect a cinematic highlight reel that not only showcases their best moments but also allows for personal customization, a significant shift from previous iterations.
This year’s Recap retains familiar statistics, such as total photo counts and top contacts, while introducing a new feature that tracks “selfie counts.” For users in the U.S. with Gemini features enabled, the Recap employs artificial intelligence to highlight standout hobbies and memorable moments from 2025.
A major upgrade in this iteration is the added control over the displayed content. Users can now choose to hide specific individuals or photos from their Recap. This means that unwanted memories, such as pictures of an ex-partner or an unflattering haircut, can be excluded with ease. After making these adjustments, users can regenerate their video to better reflect their desired narrative.
Enhanced Editing and Sharing Options
To further empower creativity, Google Photos has collaborated with CapCut, introducing an “Edit with CapCut” feature. This option allows users to export their highlight reels into CapCut, where they can apply exclusive templates and create a more personalized version of their Recap.
Sharing is more streamlined this year, with a carousel of short videos and collages available at the conclusion of the Recap. This makes it easier for users to share their highlights on social media platforms or in group chats. Additionally, there is a direct feature for sharing Recaps to WhatsApp Status, enhancing social connectivity.
How to Access Your 2025 Recap
Users can begin viewing their 2025 Recap in the Memories carousel at the top of the Google Photos app starting this week. For those who do not see it immediately, a prompt will appear at the top of the app to create the Recap. Once viewed, the Recap will remain in the Memories carousel and stay pinned in the Collections tab throughout December.
This new feature marks a progressive step for Google Photos, demonstrating responsiveness to user feedback and offering a more engaging way to reflect on personal moments from the past year.
