Mazda Recalls 14,350 SUVs Due to Faulty Fuel Gauges

Mazda has announced the recall of approximately 14,350 CX-70 and CX-90 sport-utility vehicles in Canada due to a defect in the fuel gauge. This issue could result in the gauge indicating a higher level of fuel than is actually present in the tank, potentially leaving drivers unaware of their fuel status and at risk of running out of gas while driving.
The recall affects specific models of the 2025 CX-70 and the 2024-2025 CX-90. Transport Canada has assigned recall number 2025-447 to this issue. The recall also extends to the United States, where it impacts 104,854 vehicles. Both Transport Canada and the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have initiated the recall due to safety concerns that arise from the potential for vehicles to run out of fuel, which could lead to a loss of power and increase the risk of a crash.
Details of the Recall and Repair Process
The root of the problem lies in the software of the body control module, which can malfunction and inaccurately report the fuel level. To rectify this, Mazda has instructed dealers to update the software in affected vehicles. In the interim, Mazda advises drivers to refuel their tanks before the fuel gauge drops below the quarter-tank level until the necessary repairs are completed.
It is important to note that not all CX-70 and CX-90 models are affected by this software issue. To determine if a specific vehicle is part of the recall, owners can visit Mazda Canada’s official recall page. They will need to input their vehicle identification number (VIN), a unique 17-digit code found on vehicle ownership documents or on the driver’s side dashboard.
Staying Informed About Recalls
For vehicle owners, staying informed about recalls is crucial for safety. Recall notices are legally required to be sent to registered owners by mail, so it is essential for individuals to keep their contact information updated with the manufacturer. This can be done online or through a dealership to ensure that they receive timely notifications about any applicable recalls.
For those in Canada, details about recalls for any vehicle can also be found on the Transport Canada recall page. Keeping informed can help ensure that drivers are not only aware of potential issues but also equipped with the necessary information to take action promptly.
As Mazda continues to address this fuel gauge issue, affected vehicle owners are encouraged to act swiftly to avoid any potential safety hazards.
