Samsung’s 200MP Variable Zoom Camera Begins Mass Production

Samsung has initiated mass production of its new 200-megapixel variable zoom camera, a significant advancement in smartphone photography. This development raises expectations for upcoming devices, although reports indicate that the camera will not be featured in the anticipated Galaxy S26 Ultra.
The new camera sensor is designed to offer a zoom range between 3x and 7x, a notable enhancement over the current 3x and 5x zoom capabilities found in the Galaxy S25 Ultra. The details about the camera were initially shared by Pixel Gamer 4K, which posted a GIF suggesting the sensor’s capabilities.
Despite its promising specifications, the 200MP variable zoom camera is reportedly being developed primarily for other smartphone manufacturers, particularly those based in China. This means that it is unlikely to be included in the Galaxy S26 series, which is nearing the final stages of production.
Samsung’s decision not to utilize this advanced camera in its flagship model may reflect the competitive landscape of smartphone technology. Several Chinese brands, including HONOR, Xiaomi, and soon OPPO, have already incorporated 200-megapixel periscope cameras in their devices. OPPO is expected to launch its own version in the upcoming Find X9, which may also feature the new Dimensity 9500 chipset.
The absence of a competitive zoom feature could hinder Samsung’s offerings, particularly given the high expectations for its flagship products. The Galaxy S25 Ultra and the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 have been critiqued for their zoom performance, highlighting a potential area for improvement.
If the mass production of this camera is accurate, an official announcement from Samsung regarding this new camera module is anticipated in the near future. This development could set the stage for the next generation of smartphone photography, even if it does not directly benefit Samsung’s flagship devices.
