BC Transit has announced a significant expansion of its services in the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) and the West Coast Transit system, effective January 4, 2026. This enhancement includes increased trip frequency on several routes and adjusted schedules to better accommodate riders.

As part of this expansion, BC Transit will implement more frequent trips on Route 1 Nanaimo Rapid Line and increase peak-time services on the Route VIU Express. Additionally, adjustments will be made to several other routes, including Route 7 Cinnabar, Route 25 Ferry Shuttle, Route 30 NRGH, and Route 40 VIU Express.

To help passengers navigate these changes, BC Transit advises that the holiday schedule will be in effect from December 21 to January 2. Riders are encouraged to check the updated service times for their specific routes.

Expansion of HandyDART Services

The HandyDART service, designed for individuals with disabilities who cannot use fixed-route transit, is set to receive a boost as well. Two new buses will be added to the existing fleet in the RDN, along with increased service during peak hours. Notably, Saturday service hours will shift to operate from 08:00 to 19:00, while Sunday service will run from 09:00 to 19:00. During the holiday period, HandyDART will operate from 09:00 to 17:00.

BC Transit attributes this service expansion to increased funding from local governments and the provincial budget. According to BC Transit, “The operating grant provided in the 2025-26 provincial budget will allow BC Transit and its local government partners to continue to provide safe and reliable service and demonstrates that public transit remains a priority in our communities.”

Focus on School Transit Services

As the new semester begins, BC Transit has released information regarding routes that will resume service on January 4, 2026. Routes marked with “s” in the Rider’s Guide will indicate school-focused transit services, including Routes 5 Fairview, 15/15A VIU Connector, 20/20A Hammond Bay/Dover, 30 NRGH, and 40 VIU Express, among others.

For inquiries regarding HandyDART services in Nanaimo, residents can call 250-390-3000, while those in Parksville and Qualicum are advised to call 250-248-4557. Additional details regarding the January 2026 RDN service can be found in the Rider’s Guide available on the BC Transit website.

West Coast Transit Service Improvements

In a parallel move, BC Transit’s Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) will also expand its services starting January 4, 2026. This includes additional midday trips between hitaću, Ucluelet, and Tofino, along with late-night service. The West Coast Transit bus will depart Ucluelet at 21:20 and Tofino at 22:25.

The expansion of the West Coast Transit system is similarly funded through increased local government and provincial support. BC Transit emphasizes that this improved service will enhance travel options for residents and visitors alike.

Transit services across British Columbia rely on a combination of provincial contributions, local government support, and passenger fares. BC Transit serves over 130 communities in the province, collaborating with local government partners. The organization operates a fleet of more than 1,100 buses and reported transporting over 54 million passengers in the 2023-24 period. Looking ahead, BC Transit anticipates an increase in annual ridership, projecting to reach 62 million by 2027-28.
