Memorial University’s Library Transformed into Tiny Holiday Art
The Queen Elizabeth II Library at Memorial University in St. John’s has taken on a festive appearance this holiday season, thanks to a miniature 3D printed model created by Gordon Little, the library’s IT services manager. The charming scene features fluffy snow, decorated trees, and a snowman, all encapsulated in a design that fits in the palm of a hand.
Creative Process Behind the Miniature Library
Since 2011, Little has been crafting artistic representations of the library, which he then transforms into unique Christmas cards for his colleagues. “It’s a very special building. It doesn’t look like anything else. It’s not just a little block. It’s a very inspirational shape,” Little shared during an interview with CBC News.
Little began his latest project in November, dedicating several hours to print the miniature library. After the printing process, he sanded and painted the model, receiving assistance from his children for the intricate details. “They’re good at painting little things. And I made the trees and I made the little snowman,” he explained. The tiny model also features fairy lights inside, enhancing its festive charm.
To capture the scene, Little set the library against a green screen, creating a backdrop for the photographs that would accompany his holiday cards. His journey into this artistic tradition started “as a lark” when he first joined the library, creating a simple card featuring the library in a snow globe.
Years of Artistic Evolution
Little’s creative efforts have evolved significantly over the years. He has explored various mediums, ranging from drawings and watercolours to photography and cross-stitch. “There’s also a whole lot of Photoshop silliness in between,” he noted. This year, inspired by a 3D printer he received for Father’s Day, he decided to create the miniature version of the library.
Reflecting on his artistic journey, Little said, “Some years it’s only a week or two before December and I have no idea what to do. I’m going to keep making cards until I retire.” His dedication to this tradition has brought joy to his colleagues, who eagerly anticipate each new creation.
Little shares his artwork on social media, but the miniature library is prominently displayed in the lobby of the actual library, contributing to the holiday spirit within the campus community. “We’ve got this great little display for the holiday season,” he added.
The creative endeavor illustrates the blend of artistry and community spirit that characterizes Memorial University, as Little continues to inspire with his innovative holiday projects.
