Ontario Premier Criticizes Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Over Worker Support

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has publicly criticized Lourenco Goncalves, the president and CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs, for what he perceives as a lack of concern for workers at the Hamilton-based steel company Stelco. During a press conference in Hamilton, Ford stated that Goncalves “doesn’t give two hoots” about the employees, highlighting ongoing tensions over the impact of U.S. steel tariffs on the local workforce.

Goncalves has expressed support for the steel tariffs implemented by former U.S. President Donald Trump, including the recent increase from 25% to 50%. In a press release earlier this week, he commended the U.S. Department of Commerce for expanding the scope of steel and aluminum tariffs, which have significant implications for Canadian steel producers like Stelco.

During his visit, Ford urged that Stelco should seek a new owner who prioritizes the welfare of its workers. He emphasized the need for leadership that actively supports the local economy and the individuals it employs. “Workers deserve better,” Ford stated, underscoring the critical role of corporate responsibility in maintaining a healthy workforce.

In a bid to support those affected by the tariffs, Ford announced a funding package of $70 million aimed at enhancing training and employment services for workers in industries hit hardest by these trade policies. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to mitigate the adverse effects of U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel producers and their employees.

Cleveland-Cliffs had not responded to requests for comment regarding Ford’s statements at the time of publication. The ongoing discourse around steel tariffs and their implications for the Canadian market continues to generate concern among local officials and workers alike.

As the situation develops, the Ontario government remains focused on ensuring that the needs of its workforce are met and that supportive measures are put in place to counteract the effects of international trade policies.
