Real Estate Workers Enjoy Extended Christmas Breaks in UK
The Christmas season in the United Kingdom typically sees many employees taking extended time off work, but some professions are required to remain on duty. According to a study by CVMaker, the real estate sector ranks fifth in the list of industries likely to enjoy the most time off during this festive period.
The assessment, which draws on data from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings, highlights the average working hours across various sectors. It reveals significant differences in working hours between genders and industries, offering insights into which employees will benefit from longer breaks this Christmas.
UK workers across all industries average 39.1 hours per week. For women, this figure is lower at 37.8 hours, while men work an average of 39.8 hours. Within the realm of real estate, employees log an average of 38.1 hours weekly, which is 3% less than the national average. Women in this sector work an average of 37.3 hours, whereas men work 38.8 hours.
Real Estate Sector’s Position
The real estate sector’s comparatively shorter working week places it among the industries with the most ample holiday breaks. This ranking is significant considering the demands placed on various professions during the holiday season. Many businesses close their doors, allowing employees in real estate to enjoy a longer festive break.
The top five industries with the shortest average working weeks in the UK are as follows:
1. **Education**: 35.2 hours (2,649,000 employees)
2. **Financial and insurance activities**: 36.0 hours (1,015,000 employees)
3. **Professional, scientific and technical activities**: 37.6 hours (1,837,000 employees)
3. **Other service activities**: 37.6 hours (305,000 employees)
4. **Information and communication**: 38.0 hours (1,070,000 employees)
5. **Real estate activities**: 38.1 hours (304,000 employees)
This information underscores the trend that real estate workers are positioned favorably when it comes to holiday time off.
Gender Disparities in Working Hours
The research also highlights notable gender disparities in working hours across different sectors. On average, women work fewer hours than men in every industry, with the gap being most pronounced in traditionally male-dominated sectors such as construction and transportation. For example, the education sector offers the shortest working week for both genders, with men averaging 35.8 hours and women at 34.8 hours.
Nicky Klaasse, CEO of CVMaker, emphasizes the implications of these findings for work-life balance. “This study offers valuable insights into which industries might offer better work-life balance, especially over the Christmas period,” Klaasse stated. “The education sector stands out with significantly shorter working hours than other industries, which may explain its appeal despite lower salaries.”
Klaasse further points out that the consistent pattern of women working fewer hours raises important questions regarding workplace flexibility and the impact of caregiving responsibilities. For job seekers contemplating a career change, understanding these industry norms can help set realistic expectations.
As the analysis reveals, the largest gender gaps in working hours tend to occur in sectors where men dominate. This observation raises awareness about the need for greater equity in work hours across all industries.
In conclusion, as Christmas approaches, real estate employees in the UK are among those likely to enjoy extended time off, reflecting broader trends in working hours within various sectors. Understanding these patterns not only aids employees in planning their holidays but also encourages discussions about work-life balance and gender equity in the workforce.
