Saint John City Market Gears Up for 150th Anniversary Celebrations
The Saint John City Market, known as Canada’s oldest continuously operating farmer’s market, is preparing for its 150th anniversary in 2026. As the year draws to a close, vendors are reflecting on a particularly successful season, marked by an influx of tourists and a vibrant market atmosphere.
Linda Cooke, a vendor for the past 34 years, expressed her joy about being part of the market. “I can’t stop smiling,” she said, adding that it is “a true privilege to be here.” Fellow vendor Tracey Brown, who has been selling her art at the market for three years, noted a positive trend in business. “I’m up from last year and I can’t wait to keep going,” she stated enthusiastically.
Strategic Changes and Renovations Underway
The city is currently implementing a 10-year strategic plan to enhance the market space. As part of this initiative, some vendors will relocate to new spots within the market to create more room. Businesses like the Wild Carrot have already made their moves, while others, such as Kim’s Korean Food, are undergoing renovations.
A notable addition to the market will be the new restaurant, Market Street Kitchen, which is set to open in early 2026 at the former site of Billy’s Seafood. This new establishment will feature a seating area in the centre of the market, a change that Market Manager Andrew MacDonald believes will foster a more connected environment. He explained, “It’s also going to be a performance space or a space where we can have a cooking class, or we can have a party there.”
The construction will involve removing the existing center aisle, with work to relocate vendors already in progress. MacDonald emphasized the importance of vendor input during this transitional phase. “The market is the vendors,” he stated, underscoring the need for clear communication and collaboration.
Looking Forward to Milestone Celebrations
Brown has had the opportunity to review preliminary plans and is optimistic about the future of the market. “I think that there is still a very promising future here at the Saint John’s City Market, and I can’t wait,” she remarked.
As the market approaches its milestone anniversary, plans for celebrations are already in motion. MacDonald has indicated that events will take place throughout 2026, with larger festivities scheduled for the latter half of the year once construction nears completion. “We’re talking about all kinds of collaborations with community,” he said, highlighting the potential for partnerships with local artists and vendors.
A more detailed construction plan will be presented to the city council in the coming weeks, setting the stage for an exciting year ahead for the Saint John City Market. With a focus on enhancing the experience for both vendors and customers, the market aims to celebrate its rich history while looking forward to a vibrant future.
