Flu Hospitalizations Surge in Canada as H3N2 Dominates Cases
Flu hospitalizations in Canada have experienced a significant increase, nearly doubling in just one week. The latest data from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) indicates that the number of new influenza cases surged to 11,646 in the week ending December 13, 2023, up from 7,120 cases reported the previous week.
Among the new cases, the vast majority, approximately 99 percent, were identified as influenza A. Specifically, 11,577 cases were attributed to influenza A, while only 69 cases were recorded as influenza B. The data, provided by PHAC’s FluWatch+ surveillance system, highlights a concerning trend in respiratory infections across the country.
Dominance of H3N2 Strain
The report reveals that the influenza A (H3N2) strain is currently the most prevalent among those infected. Of the subtyped influenza A cases detected, a striking 89 percent were identified as H3N2. This particular strain has been known to cause more severe illness, especially in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
The rise in flu cases correlates with the onset of winter, a period typically associated with an increase in respiratory illnesses. Health officials are urging individuals to take preventive measures, including vaccination, to mitigate the impact of the flu season.
As hospitals prepare for the potential influx of patients, public health experts emphasize the importance of monitoring symptoms and seeking medical advice when necessary. The increased hospitalization rates underscore the ongoing threat posed by influenza, particularly the H3N2 variant, which has shown to be more dominant this season.
With the significant rise in cases, the PHAC continues to monitor the situation closely. The agency’s latest report serves as a critical reminder of the importance of public health measures and vaccination efforts in controlling the spread of influenza.
