Sarnia Council Votes to Restore Funding for Health Facility
Sarnia Council has decided to restore funding for the Sarnia BACE project, approving a budget allocation of $4.3 million for the year 2026. The council’s vote on October 23, 2023, came as a response to a prior veto by the mayor, allowing the facility to secure additional funding from the Mike Weir Foundation and the Lockwood Foundation, each contributing $1 million. This financial backing is intended to bring the year-round health and wellness facility back on course.
The council’s approval came with a decisive vote of 6-3 in favor of reinstating the funding, demonstrating strong support among council members for the BACE initiative. The motion was introduced by Coun. Brian White, who emphasized the significance of the project for the community.
In a statement following the vote, Kendel Ross, project coordinator and athletic advisor for Sarnia BACE, expressed optimism about the facility’s future. “Council’s decision confirms that Sarnia BACE is moving forward and that the City sees the importance of investing in inclusive, year-round recreation opportunities that support health, wellness, community connection, and economic vitality,” Ross stated.
The Sarnia BACE project aims to enhance the community’s access to recreational resources, promoting not only physical health but also fostering social ties among residents. The facility is envisioned as a hub for various activities that cater to diverse community needs, reinforcing Sarnia’s commitment to public health and well-being.
With the restoration of funding, the Sarnia BACE initiative is expected to push forward, providing a valuable asset for residents and visitors alike. The collaboration between local government and charitable foundations illustrates a collective effort to secure a healthier future for the community.
