A new elementary school project in Lakeshore, with an estimated budget of $22.9 million, is currently on hold pending the availability of Ontario’s Education Minister, Paul Calandra, for a groundbreaking ceremony. This update was provided by Vicki Houston, director of education for the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB), during her year-end report.

Originally approved in June 2024, the school will be constructed on a 5.7-acre site located north of Girard Street and west of Rourke Line in Belle River. Construction was slated to commence in January 2025, with plans for the school to welcome students by September 2026. Houston confirmed that the board has successfully secured a contractor for the project.

“The board has entered into an agreement with Alliance General Contracting of Windsor to begin construction on the new elementary school in Lakeshore,” Houston stated. She emphasized the urgency of starting construction and expressed hope that Minister Calandra would be available soon to officiate the ceremony.

“We’ve emailed his office to find out when he’s available to come. Hopefully sooner rather than later. The construction company is ready and eager to go,” she added. This sentiment underscores the board’s commitment to advancing the project as swiftly as possible.

Houston also noted that further details regarding the construction timeline would be shared in the near future. “We look forward to moving ahead with this very exciting project and welcome a new school for students and staff in the Municipality of Lakeshore,” she said.

The GECDSB is keen to expedite the process and is awaiting a response from Calandra’s office. AM800 News has reached out for additional comments from the minister’s office to better understand the timeline for the groundbreaking event.

As the community anticipates the new school’s opening, the board remains focused on ensuring that the project progresses smoothly. The addition of this facility is expected to significantly benefit students and staff in the region, enhancing educational opportunities in Lakeshore.
