AI Revives Dead Celebrities, Sparking Debate Over Likeness Control

Hyper-realistic AI videos featuring deceased celebrities have emerged as a controversial trend, provoking both amusement and concern among audiences. Utilizing apps like OpenAI’s Sora, launched in September 2023, users have generated videos showcasing historical figures and famous personalities, including Queen Elizabeth II and Michael Jackson, in absurd scenarios. This surge has ignited discussions surrounding the ethical implications of controlling the likenesses of those who have passed away.

In various clips circulating on platforms such as TikTok and Facebook, Queen Elizabeth II is seen engaging in unlikely activities, like arriving at a wrestling match on a scooter or praising “delightfully orange” cheese puffs in a supermarket. While some users find the videos entertaining, others express discomfort over the potential for misuse. The AI tool has also drawn criticism for allowing representations that some consider disrespectful or inappropriate. In October, OpenAI restricted the creation of videos featuring Martin Luther King Jr. after his estate raised concerns about degrading portrayals.

The ability to generate such content has led to warnings from experts about the psychological effects and ethical ramifications. “We’re getting into the ‘uncanny valley,’” said Constance de Saint Laurent, a professor at Maynooth University in Ireland. She highlighted the distress that users may experience if they encounter AI-generated videos resembling deceased loved ones. “These videos have real consequences,” she noted.

Recent weeks have seen public figures, including the children of late actor Robin Williams, comedian George Carlin, and activist Malcolm X, vocalize their objections to the use of Sora for creating synthetic videos of their fathers. Zelda Williams, the daughter of Robin Williams, took to Instagram to appeal for an end to AI-generated videos featuring her father, describing the content as “maddening.”

An OpenAI spokesperson acknowledged the complexities of this issue, stating that while there are “strong free speech interests in depicting historical figures,” families should retain authority over their likenesses. For those recently deceased, authorized representatives can now request that their likeness not be used in Sora-generated content.

Despite these safeguards, Hany Farid, co-founder of GetReal Security and a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, criticized OpenAI’s approach. He argued that, while the company has limited some content, the potential for misuse remains prevalent. “Despite what OpenAI says about wanting people to control their likeness, they have released a tool that decidedly does the opposite,” Farid stated.

As the conversation surrounding AI-generated content evolves, the challenge of protecting individual identities continues. The issue was underscored recently when AI-generated clips of Hollywood director Rob Reiner circulated online following a false report of his death. This incident illustrates that the threat of misuse extends beyond public figures to include everyday individuals who may find their names and likenesses exploited without consent.

Experts have raised alarms about the broader implications of unchecked synthetic content, often referred to as “AI slop.” The proliferation of such material could erode public trust in genuine news sources. Constance de Saint Laurent emphasized that while many people do not believe misinformation, they may lose faith in authentic reporting due to the overwhelming presence of manipulated content. “This [Sora] is going to massively increase that,” she warned.

As technology advances, the ethical landscape surrounding AI-generated representations of deceased individuals remains fraught with challenges. The balance between creative expression and respect for the deceased will undoubtedly continue to fuel debates in the coming years.
