Cathay Pacific, the Hong Kong flag carrier, has announced an expansion of its luxury flight offerings to the United States. As of December 2023, the airline is operating a total of six scheduled routes between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and various US destinations, reflecting strong demand in this lucrative transpacific market. According to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics firm, all flights on these routes are served at least daily, with select routes featuring multiple departures each day.

Key Routes and Flight Frequencies

In total, Cathay Pacific will operate approximately 720 flights between Hong Kong and the US this month. The most frequent route connects Hong Kong to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), with 186 flights scheduled—equating to three daily flights in each direction. This service utilizes a combination of aircraft models, including 49 Airbus A350-1000s, 31 Boeing 777-300ERs, and 13 Airbus A350-900s. The distance from Hong Kong to New York is approximately 8,070 miles (12,987.4 km), making it the airline’s second-longest US route.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) mirrors this frequency, with 90 flights scheduled in each direction. Most days feature three departures, with a minor reduction to two on select days in early December. All flights from LAX are operated using the Boeing 777-300ER.

Next year, Cathay Pacific plans to further enhance its US network by introducing a new route to Seattle (SEA). The airline stated, “This route not only provides greater convenience for our customers, but also supports the growing demand for connectivity between Asia and North America, particularly among travellers from the Chinese Mainland and India.”

Competition and Market Position

On the West Coast, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) ranks as Cathay Pacific’s third most frequented US destination, with 84 flights scheduled in December. Passengers can expect either two or three flights in each direction daily. Covering a distance of 6,927 miles (11,147.9 km), flight times average around 12 hours when departing from Hong Kong and exceed 15 hours on the return trip. This route features a mix of the A350-900 and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

While Cathay Pacific holds a significant presence on this route, it faces competition from United Airlines, which uses San Francisco as a key hub. Data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) indicates that the combined operations of both airlines positioned Hong Kong as San Francisco’s sixth most popular international destination by passenger numbers, improving from ninth place in 2023.

Cathay Pacific has also recently engaged in a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) agreement in California, joining other members of the oneworld alliance in efforts to support environmentally friendly aviation practices.

Additional US Destinations

Beyond the primary routes, Cathay Pacific maintains daily operations to three additional cities in the United States. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) serves as the furthest destination, located 8,120 miles (13,212.7 km) from Hong Kong. Flights to DFW typically take over 16 hours in flight time and are exclusively operated with the A350-1000.

The other two destinations featuring daily service include Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). The A350-1000s used on these routes offer a luxurious experience, equipped with 46 business class flatbeds, 32 premium economy recliners, and 256 economy seats arranged in a three-class configuration.

As Cathay Pacific continues to expand its service offerings to the US, the airline is well-positioned to cater to the growing demand for premium travel options between Asia and North America.
