Gunmen Attack Hanukkah Celebration at Bondi Beach, 11 Dead
A tragic attack unfolded on Bondi Beach in Sydney on December 10, 2023, when two gunmen opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 individuals. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese labeled the incident as an act of antisemitism and terrorism, marking it as one of the deadliest shootings in Australia in nearly three decades.
The assault occurred amidst rising antisemitic incidents across the country. Although authorities did not directly link the prior attacks to this shooting, the context of increasing hostility toward the Jewish community remains significant. This incident is notable in a nation known for its stringent gun control laws.
One of the assailants was killed by police, while the second, who was arrested, is currently in critical condition. According to New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon, one of the gunmen had prior knowledge from security services, but there had been no specific threats reported. In addition to the fatalities, at least 29 people sustained injuries, including two police officers.
Details of the Attack and Community Impact
The targeted event, known as “Chanukah by the Sea,” was organized by Chabad, an Orthodox Jewish movement, drawing hundreds of attendees to celebrate the first night of the eight-day festival. Tragically, among the deceased was Rabbi Eli Schlanger, the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi and a prominent figure in the event’s organization.
Video footage from onlookers captured the chaos, showing two gunmen armed with long guns firing from a footbridge leading to the beach. One clip, aired on Australian television, depicted a man who bravely tackled and disarmed one of the shooters, subsequently placing the weapon on the ground. Premier Chris Minns praised this individual as a “genuine hero.”
Witnesses recounted the panic that ensued. Lachlan Moran, a 32-year-old from Melbourne, described the moment he heard gunfire while waiting for family nearby. “You heard a few pops, and I freaked out and ran away,” he said, noting that the shooting continued intermittently for about five minutes.
The attack unfolded at approximately 18:45 local time, just as a warm summer day was coming to an end. Local resident Catherine Merchant described the scene, stating, “It was the most perfect day and then this happened. Everyone was just running and there were bullets… we were really scared.”
Responses from Leaders and the Jewish Community
In response to the violence, Albanese expressed his devastation, condemning the act as a targeted assault on Jewish Australians during a time meant for joy and celebration. He stated, “This is an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation.” Albanese emphasized the potential for national unity that could arise from this tragedy as Australians rally around the Jewish community.
Global leaders also expressed their condolences. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack as “ghastly,” while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated he was being kept informed about the situation. The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated that the United States “strongly condemns the terrorist attack in Australia targeting a Jewish celebration,” reaffirming that antisemitism has no place in society.
Australia has seen a marked increase in antisemitic incidents, particularly following the conflict between Hamas and Israel that began on October 7, 2023. According to the government’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism, Jillian Segal, reports indicated that such incidents surged more than threefold in the year following these events. The past summer witnessed a wave of antisemitic attacks in major cities like Sydney and Melbourne, where a significant portion of the Australian Jewish population resides.
In a broader context, the Israeli President Isaac Herzog remarked on the incident, urging the Australian government to take decisive action against the rising tide of antisemitism in society, stating, “The heart of the entire nation of Israel misses a beat at this very moment.”
Mass shootings are exceedingly rare in Australia, particularly since the tightening of gun laws following the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, where 35 people were killed. The recent events have raised concerns about the adequacy of current security measures and the potential for future violence.
As investigations continue, the community in Bondi and across Australia grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, which has left an indelible mark on the nation.
