Multiple Injuries Reported in Stabbing Attack on UK Train

A stabbing incident on a train traveling through eastern England resulted in multiple injuries on the evening of March 16, 2024. The attack occurred shortly after the train had departed from Peterborough, leaving nearly a dozen passengers injured, two of whom are in life-threatening condition. The train, which had departed from Doncaster at 18:25 and was en route to London’s King’s Cross station, experienced chaos as passengers reported seeing others stabbed. Olly Foster, a passenger on the train, recalled hearing someone shout, “Run, run, there is a guy stabbing literally everyone.” Initially believing it was a prank, he soon realized the severity of the situation when he noticed blood on his hands from touching the seats.

The British Transport Police received emergency calls at 19:42. Within minutes, a significant police presence, including firearms officers, was dispatched to Huntingdon station, approximately 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of London. The train made an unscheduled stop, allowing passengers to evacuate as armed officers approached.

Response and Investigation

British Transport Police reported that officers from Cambridgeshire Constabulary boarded the train and detained two suspects within eight minutes of the first emergency call. Eyewitnesses observed that one suspect was subdued using a Taser while reportedly holding a large knife. The suspects, identified as a 32-year-old Black man and a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, are both British citizens and are being questioned on suspicion of attempted murder.

Ten individuals were taken to local hospitals, while an additional victim sought medical attention independently. Initially, nine victims were classified as having life-threatening injuries, but by the morning of March 17, authorities confirmed that only two remained in critical condition. Four of the injured had since been discharged from the hospital.

Police Superintendent John Loveless stated that while counter-terrorism officers were initially called to assist in the investigation, there is currently no evidence to suggest that the attack was of a terrorist nature. He emphasized that it would be premature to speculate on the motives behind the incident, as the investigation continues.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood commended the bravery displayed by both staff and passengers during the crisis. They also acknowledged the swift response of emergency services, stating, “Our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with all those affected, and their loved ones.”
