Ottawa Child with Brain Tumour Now Granted School Enrollment
An Ottawa family has successfully navigated a challenging admission policy, allowing their three-year-old daughter, Grace Jewett, to enroll in her local French public school. The decision comes after the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario (CEPEO) acknowledged the unique circumstances surrounding Grace’s family, particularly the health challenges faced by her eight-year-old sister, Lily Jewett.
Initially, Grace’s enrollment was complicated by a policy requiring that the eldest sibling, Lily, undergo an evaluation prior to admission. This policy was particularly distressing for the family, given that Lily is living with a brain tumour, which has significantly impacted her vocabulary and ability to communicate. Their mother, Julie Jewett, described the requirement as “cruel,” highlighting the emotional toll it took on their family.
Following media coverage by CTV News Ottawa, which brought attention to the situation, CEPEO officials arranged a meeting with Julie Jewett. On March 15, 2024, an admissions committee convened to reassess Grace’s case. The committee ultimately decided to allow Grace to attend école élémentaire publique Mamawi starting in September 2024, providing a sense of relief for the family.
In a statement to CTV News Ottawa, CEPEO remarked, “Once management was informed of the specific nature of the situation of the Jewett family, it acted promptly to adjust its outlook and consider the particularities of the demand.” Grace visited the school shortly after the decision was made and is expected to be welcomed warmly when classes resume.
Lily, who is currently in a modified educational program at another institution, is reportedly thriving in that environment. The resolution of Grace’s enrollment marks a significant moment for the family, allowing them to focus on their children’s well-being without the added stress of educational hurdles.
The swift action taken by CEPEO demonstrates an important commitment to inclusivity and understanding in the face of unique familial circumstances.
