Taber, Alta., Celebrates as Kraft Hockeyville Provincial Winner
The Town of Taber, Alberta, has been named one of the thirteen provincial winners in the prestigious Kraft Hockeyville competition. This announcement, made on Saturday night, comes as a significant boost to the community, which is now in the running for further funding and support for its local arena.
Each provincial winner receives $50,000 for arena upgrades, with the potential for even more funding if they advance to the final two. In addition, communities are awarded $10,000 worth of hockey equipment, provided by the NHL Players’ Association’s Goals and Dreams initiative and the NHL/NHLPA’s Industry Growth Fund. The Town of Taber expressed its gratitude in a statement, acknowledging the importance of this recognition. “Today is an incredible honour for the Town of Taber!” the statement read, highlighting the significance of being Alberta’s representative in the competition.
Taber faces fierce competition as it vies for the top spot against communities across Canada, including Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia, Grandview in Manitoba, and Sackville in New Brunswick. The two finalists will be announced on March 21, a date that will be pivotal for the town’s hockey aspirations.
Community Spirit and Resilience
The funding comes at a crucial time for Taber, which is currently raising funds to rebuild its community centre arena. The facility suffered severe damage when a Zamboni exploded inside on December 17, 2025. The town is mobilizing its residents to support the rebuilding efforts, recognizing that local rinks are more than just sports venues.
In its statement, Taber emphasized the role of rinks as essential community hubs. “Rinks are not just buildings,” it asserted. “They are gathering places, classrooms, and community anchors where children grow up, volunteers give their time, and memories are made that last a lifetime.” This sentiment resonates deeply, especially during challenging times, as arenas serve as gathering points for support and rejuvenation.
To further engage the community and raise funds, Taber is hosting the Play On Street Hockey tournament on March 27-28. The event will feature several former NHL players, including Brian Skrudland, Kelly Buchberger, and Rich Sutter, alongside three-time Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Johnston. Their presence is expected to draw attention and support for the town’s hockey initiatives.
As Taber moves forward in the Kraft Hockeyville competition, the community’s enthusiasm and resilience continue to shine. The potential funding not only promises crucial upgrades to the local arena but also reinforces the town’s commitment to fostering a vibrant hockey culture that brings residents together.
