His company has made significant strides in delivering secure digital education within over 90% of public prisons in England and Wales, providing inmates with access to courses that range from basic skills to vocational qualifications through offline devices in their cells.

Tailoring Education with AI

As he looks toward the future, Tweed is developing an innovative AI-powered learning assistant designed specifically for learners with conditions such as dyslexia and ADHD. This system, crafted in collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire and supported by Innovate UK, aims to adapt educational material in real time based on individual interactions, learning pace, and specific challenges.

“Too many people are held back not by lack of ability, but by education systems that aren’t designed for their specific needs,” Tweed stated. He believes that it is crucial for policymakers and education leaders to explore how adaptive technology can facilitate greater access to opportunities.

Tweed pointed out that many of the individuals Coracle serves have been excluded from traditional educational settings, leading to a higher prevalence of neurodiversity within the prison population. “It’s very clear dyslexia is far more common in the prison population than in society as a whole,” he noted.

Real-Time Support and Career Opportunities

The potential benefits of the AI initiative extend beyond educational settings. Tweed outlined how AI can provide real-time support, recognizing when learners encounter difficulties and adjusting assistance accordingly. This personalized approach aims to foster confidence and develop skills that are directly applicable to career paths.

Neurodivergent learners frequently find themselves underrepresented in conventional classrooms, which can hinder their educational and career prospects. Tweed advocates for responsive digital tools as a solution to bridge the gap between education and meaningful employment.

Importantly, the secure AI system is designed to function without internet connectivity, making it suitable for use in prisons. Tweed envisions that its capabilities could also benefit mainstream education and workplace training, thus broadening its impact.
