Community Spirit Drives Revitalization Efforts in Field, Canada
Efforts to enhance community life in Field, British Columbia, are underway, led by the all-volunteer Field Recreation Advisory Association (FRAA). This organization plays a vital role in maintaining social and recreational activities for the town’s approximately 150 year-round residents, which is necessary given the unique challenges posed by Field’s location within Yoho National Park.
The FRAA, established in 1985, manages local amenities, including a community centre and a seasonal rink. Despite the beauty of the surrounding national park, residents face hurdles when initiating community projects, as all land and facilities are under the jurisdiction of Parks Canada. According to Katrina Froese, Chair of the FRAA, “Because Field sits on federal land, every project means layers of red tape.” This complexity can delay even straightforward initiatives, such as building a playground, for years.
Despite these challenges, the community has found ways to thrive. Recent improvements to the community gym have been made possible through support from the Columbia Basin Trust, which has provided new equipment, including a treadmill, rowing machine, and weights. This revitalization has significantly increased gym membership, which has grown from 10 to between 30 to 40 year-round members, and can reach up to 60 during the summer months when seasonal workers are present.
Community Engagement and Well-being
To meet the needs of its diverse population, which includes both retirees and young families, the FRAA has focused on expanding access to recreational facilities. Many residents rely on local options, especially during the long winters when travel can be difficult. “If you don’t ski or drive, what can you do for your well-being? We knew we needed to expand our gym,” Froese explained.
The FRAA also recently enhanced the Kids Room at the Field Community Centre, adding educational and sensory-friendly toys to create a welcoming environment for families. These improvements underscore the organization’s commitment to fostering connection within the community.
“Each improvement, whether it’s gym equipment, toys for families or the new snowplow blade, means a lot,” Froese stated. The new snowplow blade funded by the Trust will assist in keeping the community rink clear this winter, ensuring that it remains a hub for local activities, including weekend games and annual tournaments.
The relationship between the FRAA and the Columbia Basin Trust has been instrumental. Trust staff initially visited Field after hearing about the annual “Yoho Blow” event, recognizing the community’s need for support. Today, five Community Liaisons work with communities like Field to address challenges and bolster local projects that enhance well-being.
Future Initiatives and Community Development
Looking ahead, the FRAA is planning to renovate the historic St. Joseph Church to create a new community space for arts, culture, and gatherings. This project aims not only to provide a venue for local events but also to generate additional revenue for the FRAA, ensuring the sustainability of their efforts.
Froese emphasized the importance of these community spaces: “Community spaces like our centre, rink, and gym mean everything to Field. We rely on ourselves to get things done. By understanding what we need and supporting us in those efforts, the Trust has been tremendous for us.”
In a small, tight-knit community like Field, the collaborative spirit of its residents and organizations plays a crucial role in maintaining a vibrant and engaged community life. As they continue to navigate the complexities of living within a national park, the dedication of volunteers like Froese and the support from organizations like the Columbia Basin Trust ensure that Field remains a place where connection and belonging thrive.
