Community Spirit Revitalizes Recreation in Field, Yoho

Field, a small community nestled in the heart of Yoho National Park, is thriving thanks to the dedication of its residents and the support of local organizations. Under the leadership of Katrina Froese, Chair of the Field Recreation Advisory Association (FRAA), the community is enhancing its recreational offerings and fostering a stronger sense of belonging among its approximately 150 year-round residents.

The FRAA, a volunteer-driven organization, plays a crucial role in maintaining the social fabric of Field. The challenges of living in an unincorporated area within a national park mean that even small community projects can involve extensive bureaucracy. “Because Field sits on federal land, every project means layers of red tape,” Froese explained. This complexity can delay initiatives that are vital for community engagement.

Recently, a partnership with the Columbia Basin Trust has led to significant improvements in the community gym. New equipment, including a treadmill, weights, and a rowing machine, has revitalized the facility, providing residents with more opportunities to stay active year-round. The gym, once limited to a few weights and a ping-pong table, has expanded its membership from 10 to between 30 and 40 year-round members, and up to 60 during the summer months when seasonal workers are present.

Strengthening Community Connections

The FRAA not only operates the gym but also manages a community centre and a seasonal rink that transforms into a skating venue each winter. These spaces are essential for social interaction, hosting events, and providing activities for families, including a children’s playroom and weekly playgroups. “We have a mix of retired people and young families,” Froese noted. “Some don’t drive, and winter roads can be tough. We knew we needed to expand our gym.”

The recent improvements to the gym and community centre have been complemented by enhancements to the children’s playroom, which now features new educational and sensory-friendly toys. “Each improvement, whether it’s gym equipment or toys for families, means a lot,” Froese said. The community rink, located behind the Field Community Centre, is another key hub for activity, where residents gather for weekend games and an annual tournament every January.

Efforts to enhance these facilities have been bolstered by financial support from the Trust. A new snowblade, funded through this partnership, will ensure the rink remains accessible during winter, allowing for uninterrupted recreational activities.

Looking Ahead: New Initiatives and Renovations

The collaboration between the FRAA and the Columbia Basin Trust has been instrumental in addressing the unique challenges faced by the community, particularly in terms of limited services. “The Trust has been tremendous for us,” Froese stated, highlighting the importance of understanding local needs in order to foster well-being through shared spaces.

With recent projects nearing completion, the FRAA is now focusing on a new initiative: renovating the historic St. Joseph Church to create a community space for arts, culture, and gatherings. This project aims to enhance the community’s cultural offerings while also generating revenue.

As Field continues to grow and adapt, the commitment of its residents and the support of organizations like the Columbia Basin Trust will remain vital. “Community spaces like our centre, rink, and gym mean everything to Field,” Froese concluded, emphasizing the significance of these facilities in promoting connection and health within the community.

The spirit of volunteerism and collaboration in Field exemplifies how local efforts can bring about meaningful change, ensuring that this beautiful corner of Yoho National Park remains a vibrant place to live and thrive.
