Radio City Rockettes Celebrate 100 Years of Holiday Magic
The iconic Radio City Rockettes are celebrating their centennial with a festive performance of their renowned Christmas Spectacular in New York City. This remarkable milestone marks a century of captivating audiences with high-energy dance routines, showcasing the troupe’s signature precision kick line and beloved performances like the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.”
Founded in 1925 as the “Missouri Rockets” in St. Louis, the troupe evolved into the Rockettes under the guidance of theatre impresario S.L. “Roxy” Rothafel. The group gained prominence after relocating to the newly constructed Radio City Music Hall in 1932. Their annual Christmas Spectacular began in 1933, establishing a holiday tradition that has delighted generations of audiences.
Over the years, the Rockettes have transformed from a modest group of sixteen dancers to a company of over eighty performers. They now stage as many as five shows a day, incorporating various dance styles, including jazz, tap, and ballet. Isabelle Harris, a 20-year-old first-time Rockette from Utah, expressed her excitement about joining the troupe during this historic year, stating, “In my mind, the Rockettes were this amazing, strong, unique, glamorous group of women that I wanted to be a part of.”
The Rockettes hold a rich history, having famously entertained American soldiers during World War II and appearing in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for decades. Their performances have recently extended to major events, including the NFL’s Super Bowl Halftime Show and the Tony Awards, showcasing their versatility and enduring appeal.
Tradition Meets Innovation
While the essence of the Christmas Spectacular remains rooted in tradition, the show has also embraced modernity. The choreography of many iconic numbers, like the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” has largely remained unchanged. However, advancements in costume design and technical elements have enhanced the overall experience. This year, audiences can expect a new immersive sound system, akin to the technology used at the Sphere entertainment venue in Las Vegas.
Julie Branam, the show’s longtime director, noted that the Rockettes have introduced contemporary elements, including digital projections and even a double-decker sightseeing bus in the new number “New York at Christmas.” These modern touches enhance the festive atmosphere while honoring the troupe’s storied legacy.
The Rockettes have faced challenges throughout their history, including a decline in popularity during the 1960s, which coincided with cultural shifts. They went on strike in 1967 for better pay. Despite these challenges, they managed to revitalize their image, particularly in the late 1970s, when they became the face of a campaign to preserve the Radio City Music Hall.
Notably, the Rockettes broke barriers in the late 1980s with the integration of their lineup, when Jennifer Jones became the first Black Rockette in 1987. This change paved the way for a more diverse representation within the troupe, which has continued to evolve.
Enduring Legacy and Future Aspirations
The Rockettes’ rigorous training and dedication to their craft are evident in their performances, with dancers executing over 200 kicks in each 90-minute show. Taylor Shimko, an assistant dance captain in her 16th season, remarked, “What’s truly amazing is that we are all exceptional dancers but we are also athletes. Every part of this is hard work, but it’s all about making it appear as though it’s easy.”
Danelle Morgan, a dance captain in her 20th year, reflected on the legacy of the Rockettes, stating, “Being a Rockette is something I didn’t anticipate. It becomes a piece of your identity, this job. It’s something that’s really special.” Her sentiments echo the experiences of many dancers who have aspired to be part of this legendary troupe.
As the Rockettes celebrate this significant milestone, they continue to inspire generations of performers and audiences alike. The Christmas Spectacular runs through January 5, 2024, and is expected to attract over one million viewers, solidifying the Rockettes’ place as a cherished holiday tradition in New York City.
