Abram Knelsen, a farmer from Ruthven, Ontario, recently experienced a remarkable event when one of his Aberdeen Angus cows gave birth to quadruplet calves. This rare occurrence, which took place on March 5, 2024, has left the local farming community in awe and Knelsen himself feeling elated.

The birth of four healthy calves in one afternoon is an extraordinary event in cattle farming. According to the BBC, the chances of a cow giving birth to quadruplets are approximately one in 700,000, while the odds of all four calves surviving are even slimmer, estimated at one in 11 million. “To me, it is a miracle. Yes, it is,” Knelsen stated. “I was the happiest guy on Earth.”

After the births on Tuesday, the calves were seen mooing for milk and exploring their surroundings by Wednesday afternoon. This joyful discovery was shared with Knelsen’s family through a group chat, where his daughter-in-law, Christine Knelsen, received updates that escalated quickly. Initially reporting twins, Abram soon confirmed there were three, and finally, the astonishing news of four calves. Christine recounted, “Everybody was just like, that’s insane.”

Natural Breeding Brings Unexpected Joy

Knelsen emphasized that the successful births involved no medical intervention, attributing the event solely to natural breeding practices. “There was nothing involved,” he explained. “This was the natural breeding. Like Nature would give it.” The new calves consist of three males and one female, adding to Knelsen’s existing herd of cows.

In the context of beef farming, this unexpected addition is viewed positively. Knelsen expressed confidence that he could manage the increased number of animals, noting that an Aberdeen Angus bull can be valued at several thousand dollars on the market. “Oh yes, four at a time — it is a windfall,” he remarked, highlighting the financial benefits of the births.

As Knelsen continues to care for the calves, their healthy condition has brought a renewed sense of excitement to his farm. The local community is likely to share in this joy, celebrating a rare moment in agricultural life that few have the opportunity to witness.
